Hey y'all, so I'm about to try and set my first coyote traps but have a few questions. So I found a few field where I have lots of coyotes coming through on my trail cams but they're completely covered in kind of tall grass. Was thinking of doing a dirt hole sets but me question is, should I just level the dirt exposed over the trap or should I try and cover it with the grass to blend it in better? Here are some pictures of what I'm working with.

There are better on here then me. But I started using pipe dream this year and grass clippings with metal screen cover. I will be doing many more. Look in the past posts for Zags Pipe Dream.

Make it look like a badger dug the hole...depending on trap size, that dictates hole size... a dirt hole well blended defeats the purpose of a dirt hole .... you want lots of dirt on top

Try some flashy dirt hole sets and blended flat sets and see what works best.

That clearing looks like a great spot, if you find tracks or scat in it set on the upwind edge, using that tall grass for backing. Use dirt holes and leave the dirt exposed, but blend out the edges so that it’s not a hard line, the dirt should just fade into the grass at the edge of the trap bed. Coyotes don’t like hard lines.

Looks like you have plenty of room to try a couple different things. Don’t forget about a simple scent post either. Find a rock or a bigger clump of weeds in the lane and bed a blended in trap in front with a shot of urine on the backing. Throw in a flashy dirt hole a little farther down. Either way make sure the trap is bedded solid so it doesn’t wiggle. Have to experiment and find out what’s works best for you. Look up the “compass set” also in the archives.

Showy with dirt, need to look natural, try to get it at least 14" deep

X2 on Pipe Dream sets. Easy to blend in grass like that, and easy to get the trap bedded solid.
