This is my first coyote of the year. I know, not pretty but that's my luck. Question is, if I put it up will I get anything for it? Even $5.00? [Linked Image]

Notice the tail, especially in the last picture. Looks like part red fox!

Coyote market is strong. It should be worth something. Will be able to tell better once it has had a bath and is all spruced up.

It is hard to evaluate because it is matted down from the wet.
Looks like a red,not the most desireable colour in todays market but the good ones do sell OK.
I would skin, flesh, wash, dry out the fur to damp then board, turn and brush.

Its hard to tell when they are wet and muddy. Skin it and wash it. Either in a washing machine with cold water and no soap or in a five gallon bucket with water. Use a bathroom plunger in the bucket. just an up and down motion for a few minutes. pour the water out and repeat. Wring it out and pop it a few times. Should be able to tell if the front half has problems or if its just matted down.

She was really muddy, so I dunked her in the ditch a few times and hung her in the shed. I ran a fur comb over her a couple times before the pictures were taken, mainly to help dry faster.
Danny- the front half is not matted down, it is missing hair (thanks for being optimistic though). I just wondered if the little bit of usable fur was worth anything.

You never know. This coyote was gorgeous after it was skinned and cleaned up. Dont comb any more wet ones. Just take the skin by the nose and run your hand down it a few times squeezing the water out. Then pop it like a whip a couple times and hang it by the nose to dry some. After its fleshed and turned fur out you can brush it. To easy to damage them when everything is softened up by water.

I never saw anything like it if it looks like that when clean and dry

DD,

Trichodectes canis caused the damage to the guard hairs on the neck and above the shoulders. It is a parasitic insect (louse) that feeds on the base of the guard hairs. No value.

If that guard hair is missing and not just laying flat, no way I would waste my time skinning that thing.

Caught this one Saturday after we finally got a rain. Ran him through the Montgomery Ward washer and wringer and he cleaned up pretty good.
