Hi everyone hope your having a great night. Anyways, my young son's and I were talking about a dream trip to trap wolves. Currently we live in Indiana so the resident option is obviously not there. If we were able to take a week or so next year where would you recommend I look to go? I know there are required wolf trapping courses and "stuff" but overall, what would be the recommendations. We do not have any family or friends in any of the places so more than likely it would be primarily cold rolling. By the way, I attempted to look through the archives but nothing I searched returned results. Thanks in advance if even just for the conversation.

Blessings,

Idaho allows non resident wolf trapping. You need to complete a wolf trapping class though.

Unless you are unbelievably lucky one week in Idaho with no scouting you would be lucky to find a track(at least in extremely northern Idaho).

One week is not enough time.
A better option would be to arrange a trapping trip with an established Canadian or Alaskan wolf trapper.

Even with an arranged trip, two weeks is likely no where near enough time. I don't want to discourage you but just being realistic.

Maybe you can come up with a different goal with better odds of some success

You would be able to get a wolf with an outfitter on a wolf hunt.
I don't know any outfitters that offer wolf trapping.

A week in ID would be tough. It would take a couple days to get all your gear out, unless you were only running a few traps. Spread wide over a big area is better. 2 weeks might be enough though. As others said, you need the class first as well. Easy enough to find them in Nov/early Dec. There's lodges and plenty of camp options too. Let me know if you need more info.

I know where you could find plenty of wolf tracks, but your odds of connecting aren't good. There are wolves on the Kenai Peninsula south of here that subsist partly off road-hit moose; but they have PhDs in outwitting trappers. Lots of trapping competition off the only highway, trappers after everything from beavers to wolverines. And everyone trying to trap or snare a wolf, mostly failing and only educating the wolves. You could see plenty of tracks in a week's time, but the wolves down there are rarely seen.

One year, back when I was still trapping, I caught two Kenai wolves. It took me a month and a half (after going to wolf trapping school in Fairbanks) to figure out how to do it. I made a small bait pile with beaver carcasses and snared the wolves on the trails to the bait. Lot of work, and I lost some gear to theives.

That would be cool...but unrealistic unless you could commit more time..

Is that Paul Trepus's outfit? If so, that would be a trip worth doing I think.

I did what you have in mind this fall.
I scouted the area I wanted to trap twice this summer.
I spent the rest of the spring/summer preparing vechiles, equiptment, and spending money on wolf gear. Then spending more money on wolf gear. I am a member of Inter mountain fur harvesters, ITA, and F4WM. I attend their events as a wealth of wolf info and comarodity there.
I was very fortunate in that a good friend invited me to stay in his camp in the area I had scouted. I would not have successful without this partnership.
I caught my first wolf 22 days after starting setting. I caught my second wolf 32 days after the first.
I believe having enough time to commit is more important than where you go. Call Boise or CDA Game dept office and ask to speak to a wolf bio.
Buy a copy of Alaska wolf trapping manual from Alaska trappers assoc. It'll keep the boys fired up.
This wolf deal is the biggest trapping/hunting pit of time and money Ive been involved in. But Im addicted now and am prepareing to get back at it.
Good Luck

One of the trappers near us scheduled a week on a guided trap line with a person in Alaska. He wound up with two Alaskan wolves, a wolverine and a lynx. This was about 10 years ago. This was done in the winter and it was cold. We had him do a demo and or talk at our district rondy with the mounts.

Thank you for all the responses and information. I knew a week wouldn't be enough time, ideally I would have more time to give. I was considering one of those trapline experience trips but as a Pastor a trip costing between 4000 and 8000 for a week is far beyond my financial ability lol. Some of the outfits I saw only allow the client trapper to keep one fur that was caught, some allow one of each caught and some didn't allow you to keep anything that was caught during the trip. I am very happy to hear that some have had success and who knows, I may figure a way to get it done too. Until then we will just squint really hard at the coyotes and pretend they are wolves lol. Thanks again guys.

Tom
