When I started trapping in late 1940s, all I had for coon were #2 LS. The first couple of years I was big enough or strong enough to set by myself. So, I would compress the springs with a vise at home, wire the springs down and carry them to creek. I caught quite a few those years and never had one chew out.
Then in the 1960s when I started trapping fox (all land sets of course) I caught a lot of coon in #2 Victor Square Coil springs and never had any chew out. So most of the time when I set for coon, I still use #2 coil springs. A couple years I went heavy on coon trapping I used along with my #2s some #1.5 coils. So my opinion is... use what you have, set the pan tension a little heavier than a dead drop and hope for the best.

Never cared for #2 coils for coon.OK in the water if they go down quicky into deep water. Prefer #1s ,#11s and # 1 1/2s for coon. Tom

Set for a mouse, stake for an elephant. Smaller traps work better for coon. Jim

A number 2 dls is a 1 1/2 with an extra spring-same size jaws. That was my first thought. I love #2dls for coons, even on dryland. Now, a #2 coil is a different story, unless you're getting them in the water. IMO.

Can't use 220's on land here unless in a box/bucket (with inset requirements) or 4' off the ground. Dont get me wrong, I use a lot of 160's and DP's but i run a lot of footholds too. I like to catch the fox or coyote that may get in my coon set, that wouldn't be caught in my DP or 160 coon set.

If I am not mistaken--a #2 double longspring actually has the same jawspread as a# 1 1/2 longspring. Tom

You can kill a moose with a 22 longrifle rimfire but I doubt anybody grabs one to go moose hunting. you can kill a squirrel with a 30-06 but I doubt anybody grabs one to go squirrel hunting. no such thing as a trap that works good for coyotes fox and coon either.
I run a lot of mb650's for coyotes. usually though the coons i get in coyote sets are back footed and held just fine. i run offsets and front footed coons pull out. MOST of the time not always. they hold fox too but if i was in s.e pa or md i would run 1 1/2's for fox
put me in the 1 1/2 coil camp for coons most of the time. on a drowner on a muddy creek bank with a pocket set a #2 longspring beats a #11 IMO. They bed better in soft mud

The thing with coon in my opinion,is if they have time to work their foot,.thats a problem.1.5's are tight, lams better,.wider grab on a slippery taper. Getting them deep,...in a sense alleviates putting that trap right in front of them. Lams and coon (or beaver) do not go together...unless severely oversprung. Can get by with it more in the southern states (smaller coon) but not up here. Will always lose a percentage of coon (and beaver) with lams. Now back to the #2 and coon. Been a lot of coon caught in coyote traps with #3s and above that are properly swiveled. I rarely lose on in a coyote trap. Also plenty of coon chew their feet in 1.5s. If NOT offset they are usually still there, however. Run what you have and pay attention to your own failures when they happen. Adjust accordingly.
