hey i am trapping on about 400 acres all with cattle access. iím wondering what would be the best sets for in fields and along tree lines and fence lines iím using sleepy creek #4 long springs and mb450s. the sleepy creeks are to big for trench sets and i wanted to make some flat and dirt hole sets

What ever set you use don't forget to tell every cow in the pasture not to step on your trap ,if you miss telling one cow that they will dance all over your set.lol On the serious side if you set in a pasture don't let the cows see you if you can help it try to find out of the way corners and areas they don't seem to be in, if the land owner has any crop ground out side the fence look for a trail under the fence and set the trail on the crop side of the fence far enough away to prevent entanglement in the fence. Good luck

It hard to even get permission to trap pasture land around here. First they see you digging a hole in the field, then you explain to them it's a small hole with bait in it. (Oh ok) then there's the deal breaker when you catch that first yote and and they see a fight circle where there use to be grass the cows could've chewed on.
So explain to the property owners were you plan on making sets and if they agree with that.
I've been told time after time when asking for permission, we just shoot them and leave'em lay for the birds
Because trapped coyotes just ruin are fields.

Dont use pee. It attracts cows. Stay away from the cattle trails that im sure they have. Dirt holes work fine. Step downs might help keep a few from getting stepped on. Dont use any trap that is big enough for a cow hoof to fit in. MB450 and 550s will be great. I wouldnt use anything bigger.

My experiences trapping around cattle or even lots of deer, "frustration, lots of remakes and bent traps" if there are places outside the fence would be best but like WWC said not to tangle in fence

I wonít trap fields with cows or horses until theyíre in the barn the rest of the winter. Some farmers donít understand that. Until I caught one of their sheep lol

I donít trap because I want to
I trap because I have to

My experience is all with dairy cows and heifers, mostly Holsteins and my best cattle set was always just on the other side of the fence.

A post hole set should do the trick, but it doesn't work well during rain or heavy snowfall. Use a set of post hole diggers to make a hole ten to twelve inches deep and just big enough for the trap to fit. Set the trap in the bottom of the hole and poke a 3/4' hole in the, side, just above the trap and covering. Use a paste bat and gland lure in the hole. Use a small feather to put in the lure as it adds eye appeal. The dirt from the hole should be piled around the hole, leaving none on the downwind side. Bait and/or lure hole should be opposite this open area. Don't believe there is a cow or horse that will voluntarily step down into a hole that small. Could just set outside the fence and avoid any possible problems.

Like others have said, don't let the cows see you. Especially if you carry your gear in a bucket!

Most of my coyote trapping has been done around cattle. I'm no expert but seems like urine is a great attractant for cattle. The best thing I did was put decent size limbs down. 8-10 foot on either side of my traps to redirect the cattle around the set. That seemed to work well in keeping them out of the set. You don't want to just lay a limb down on the ground, it has to have branches that stick up and kind of get in the way of the cattle to redirect them.

I trap in cattle pastures all the time. Seems some are worse than others. Like already been said avoid a lot of urine. I honestly donít have that much trouble. If I have cows tripping traps I just move them and can usually pick up a coyote or two.

Gonna try a set a friend told me about. Make a flat set w a punch hole w bait in it. Then cover the trap w a cow pie w a dab of lure on the bottom. Coyote will flip over cow pie and get caught in flat set. Let me know if you try it how it works.
