Msturm, in Alaska you can use the carcasses of animals classified as furbearers for trapping bait, but cannot use any part of animals classified as big game for bait.
That leftover moose that got freezer-burned in the back of your freezer? Can't use it.
That mink carcass? Yes, you can use it.

Alaska trapping regulations specifically say, "You may us the following as bait for trapping furbearers: the hide, viscera, head, or bones of game legally taken after salvage of edible meat; parts of legally taken big game animals that are not required to be salvaged as edible meat, if the parts are moved from the kill site.

Nice, there is Nothing better than catching mink after mink on purpose! You can make the musk go a long ways also. You'll also find it is a curiosity lure to other animals. If you are hesitant about the use you can try portions at various distances from your set. For blind sets I don't like to break their normal lope. For baited sets you can use some on both sides of your set. A small bit is all that is needed. Again congrats. How is your population there? While hunting on the Penninsula I was thrilled to see mink tracks next to brown bear tracks. That was when I realized I wasn't in Punxsutawney, Pa. anymore! Often wondered how the salmon run influenced the population dispersal.

Hey Thanks MinkGuy!
The population on the Anchor river is thriving. I saw quite a few mink tracks while fishing silvers and steel head this summer/fall, so I figured I would target them, as I have done no water trapping to speak of. I have some sets out for otter too, but the flooding and freezing is causing those to be a headache, It is a grand adventure. I have about a mile of river bank to work with (private) and a bridge. The freeze and thaw cycles with our unusually warm winter has really got things out of whack and not a lot of sign out now. Temps are dropping and things are stabilizing so I have high hopes for the future. If I don't catch anything else no big deal. I have learned a lot already with my long series of near misses and my goal was one mink on purpose! So I am excited about the season as things are starting to look good!
As for salmon in the streams, yes I have noticed that where there are smolt there are more mink tracks, but there are also hibernating frogs, weasels, voles, a population boom of hares, etc. for the mink to eat. I honestly think the smolt population is more directly related to otter population than mink. But I am just going off of 3 years of personally observed data and I am no biologist.
