Squirrel..especially if that is plywood I would say squirrel too if it was gradual and took a little while to get to where it is now. They eat my steps. Plus if it was a small critter you would think a dozen cats would have intervened. No, I'm not going with Hippo because there hasn't been a wild hippo sighting around here in 14 years so, I'm going with coon.
I wonder if tap dancers walk into a room, look at the floor, and think, I'd tap that. I wonder about things.....

Second thought..........it probably IS a coon. A squirrel would not need to enlarge that area to gain access. On the other hand he may just be eating the plywood. I have seen them do that too.........squirrels, not coons.
What I have to wonder about is why not sit on the ground and chew it rather than hanging on the door while chewing ? It's like the old bull and the young bull . Hmmmm, can you tell me about the bulls you speak of?

It will be interesting to find out. With the herd of freakin cats she has (wife) I haven't seen any signs of a rat for about 10 years, I would also think a squirrel would not want to gain access with all the freakin cats. I think it could be a coon, but why would it go up high and how would it hang on to chew the hole. Like I said in the original post, there is a Dutch door to the left of the walk in door it is about 10-12 feet away and the top door is left open unless it is really going to get cold. The freakin cats use that to go in and out when the lower half of the Dutch door is closed. You would think if it is a coon the coon would be smart enough to go in that way unless it fears the horse and donkey. There is dry cat food available inside 24/7. Some mornings all of the dishes are completely empty, the wife uses about 6 or 7 dishes of some sort.
I got myself a seniors' GPS. Not only does it tell me how to get to my destination, it tells me why I wanted to go there.

I am going to guess coon as well since it happened in a short amount of time at night . I think it chewed there because the gap was the widest there and it wanted to open it up with the least amount of chewing compared to other places on the door. It also had a good reason to go in there.
I'm just happy to be here! Today I'm as young as I'll ever be and and older than I've ever been before!
