Bought my first one about 2 months ago so I'm no expert but I went with a sig 365. So far I like it and the guy at the gun highly recommended it.

That's like asking what traps does everyone like. Though I don't own one (yet), I've looked a lot at the Sig P365.

Best advice is to narrow your search down to 4 or 5 then head to your local indoor shooting range and try them all out, and be open to more suggestions.

And when you do narrow it down to a couple, search for them on YouTube and watch the Hickock45 video on them. He does a good job going over features and comparable models.

Go to a gun shop and handle the ones you like and ask them what’s a good one and what ones to avoid, like you say fit is the best reason to buy a gun pretty won’t hit squat.

I shopped for about a year, while being a vendor at gun shows. I could afford to buy whatever pistol I wanted, but settled on a Kel-Tec p11, simply because it fit my hand the best. I only had to put out $250 for it. I have shot it a lot and still do, with no problems whatsoever.

My best advice is to do the same I did...pick up and get the feel of as many pistols as you can. Don't just buy what people tell you is the right one for you because it has to fit your hand well to shoot it properly so you feel confident with it, and will actually carry it. A couple of them will stand out as feeling "right" and you can narrow it down from there.

I would buy a .40 over a 9mm. That is just my opinion. I carry and use a Taurus PT 140 shoots great and handles well and has more knock down that 9mm.

Don't know you or your experiences, but why a 9 (other than expense and availabillity) .40 or 10 a much better choice IMO. I do appreciate all firearms, however feel that the 9mm is balistically not much of a round (not saying it's bad) but why limit your choices -- find a gun that feels right in your hand and that you can shoot well. I am assuming you want an auto. If that is not important look to .38/.357.

Great choice. The Glock 43 is an awesome little pistol that will go bang every time, but the Sig 365 is just slightly larger but holds more rounds. With the ammo we have these days 9mm is plenty good with advantages over the 40mm, mostly the cost of ammo. Like any tool, to master it takes lots of practice.

by the way sw 645, colt 357 snubby, sw66, sw586,rem 19ll, tc contender ( 44mag, 22, 7-30 waters, 35rem, 223, ) my son has several handguns and from shooting them i have been impressed by the .40s for acccurracy feel and balistics. I do however think that the 10 is a superior round (balistically though I wish it would have taken off more comercially) .

Bought my son a Glock43 for his 21st birthday. His wife liked it so much he bought her one. They put lasers on both and play in their yard seeing who can hit the center of the target the most. That little gun will fit in your pocket. And with today’s ammo, a 9mm will stop a threat.

there is compact and sub compact

compact is the G19 size category the Glock 19 I like it i had some handguns that were hard to find holsters and parts for and I said I am just going to buy a glock and never search for a holster again , holster companies did get better about making holsters for other guns also.
you could buy a gun for a hundred less than the glock 19 then spend a hundred finding a holster it used to be kind of crazy finding a holster for good concealed carry before 2011 you have a very limited holster selection and since the holster market has exploded

compacts worth looking at
Glock 19
Sig P320 - this can actually be a compact a sub compact a duty size and a long slide , the serialized part is the trigger group you change out frames for about 50 dollars.
S&W M&P compact they also have a M&P compact 2.0 out
Ruger SR9 compact
Ruger security 9 compact
Hk VP9
walther PPQ

then there is Sub Compact and in this category you choose single stack or double stack
G26 is on the big side of this category
G43 G43X G48
Ruger LC9 , LC9s LC9s-2 EC9
S&W sheild
Sig P365

in this sub compact and if you have a big hand like I do , the Pinkie rest on the mag can make a gun shoot much different with it on than with it off , I much prefer the pinkie rest on it very much improves my grip which improves how fast I can get back on target from recoil.

your best bet is go to a range that rents and generally they have a package where you can try multiple guns in one caliber this is the way to go

first go hold them all what fits what doesn't feel right make your list , what you like about each and what you don't his will be your short list for what you want to rent then rent them and make notes and shoot bring a friend to stuff mags for you if you have one .

as for why 9 , because modern self defense ammo is all loaded so similar now it hardly matters , a hit from a 9 gets 12 inches of penetration as does a hit from a 45 at the end of the day 9 is easier to shoot , especially in a small gun and you get more rounds.
a lot of police departments and FBI have goon back to the 9 easier to score hits and score hits fast with quick follow up shots and a lot easier on the gun.
I shot 40 for a few years in my action pistol gun. before going 9mm
there is a reason you see a LOT of 40 LE trade in guns because they could not run them as many years without braking parts it is just a higher pressure cartridge. could load 40 and 45 hotter sure but the police and ammunition companies are all trying to load to the FBI standard you can get there with a 9 now that we have better bullets than we did 26 years ago when 40 came out.

so buying a gun you can really afford practice with a bunch and make hits with confidence and make hits fast and follow up shots fast

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

FBI, and the State police and most of the local jurisdictions around me are going back to the 9mm from 40 and.45’s. I think some new study came out recently saying the 9mm was better. I don’t know any of the details though.

I think the first thing you should do is ask yourself, what am I using the pistol for? conceal carry, home protection. Why do I want to carry a pistol. Do I have the mine set to use the weapon if necessary. There are a lot of factor when buying a weapon. Choose wisely

I assume you’re looking for a compact to carry concealed? If not for concealed carry go get a full sized pistol.

If you are looking for a carry gun- First, I’d suggest finding friends or a business that would let you practice firing some different guns to see what you like. At the very least go to a gun shop or two and fondle some to see what fits your hands, points naturally, if the shop says it’s ok, dry fire a few to see which triggers feel good (of course all safe gun handling practices apply).
Another thing to consider is what you would like for safeties -Glock, sig have built in trigger safeties, Springfield has a grip safety,S&W has an assortment of safety options, 1911’s have a thumb and grip safety, or you go with a DA/SA pistol that uses a heavy trigger pull on the first shot. Holstering a loaded firearm is the most dangerous part of carrying.
Then comes how how you are built, how you dress and where you can hide a gun. I’m short and stocky, I carry my Springfield XDm 45compact at the 4 o’clock position in a white hat holster microtuck. I can hide a short fat gun better than a long , thin gun.! I’ve tried carrying my wife’s M&P shield 9mm and with the extended mag in I can’t keep it hidden.See what works for you!
Lastly, double vs single stack. If you can’t figure out which feels good in your hands, points naturally and hides well for you consider what your intentions are for the gun. Just carrying? Single stacks are pretty sweet. Want to be able to have a short 10 round mag for carrying then throw in a 30 rounder for fun at the range or home defense maybe a double stack is in order.
It’s a lot to think about but do your homework. And try some stuff out if you can before you buy. It’s a lot of money to spend and if you do it right , you’re more apt to carry on a regular basis. Sorry for the rant.

A .380 in a black label 1911 and it shoots and the narrow frame makes it easy to conceal
