Fully prime or just primed enough to sell for a bit of cash? Fully prime is the month of December.November is pretty good, Oct. can be bad in the beginning and pretty good toward the end of the month.

Long time ago I came to the conclusion that if I asked other trappers when I should start trapping i'd never set a trap

State wildlife agencies don't open seasons to coincide with fur primeness, they open them to reduce populations of damage causing animals or to provide opportunity. The level of prime has little to do with when a season is opened. You are giving agencies way too much credit

Is there a chart showing when to expect prime by region and animal? I've sent lots of Northern Maine Oct coyotes to NAFA and I'm guessing about 10 to 20% of them graded II, the balance graded I-II. This year I'll find out how they grade at FHA.

Never any #1's? I can't recall ever having a #1 grade coyote. I've had select fisher & marten, but my Maine coyotes grade II or I-II. Probably 90% of them killed in Oct.

Someone told me of a NAFA buyer who said a coyotes fur is only prime for one day a year and after 20 something years in the business he can tell if the fur in his hands was caught on that day. Any truth to that?

I would say like here Thanksgiving good as it gets.till Dec. 15-20 then go down hill directly there after.
