I don't care if your all lit up in orange or in camo, there's no excuse for shooting another hunter. It's simple, if ya can't fully identify your target ya keep your finger off the trigger. I also think there is more to this story. Very sorry to hear about this, their family has to be devastated.

I wonder if tap dancers walk into a room, look at the floor, and think, I'd tap that. I wonder about things.....

Grew up slug hunting and doing drives. It does produce deer that’d be missed by sitting in a stand or by someone still hunting. I understand, in mn we only get 2 weekends to fill a tag and mostly buck tags. But to me it just brings the idiot in some guys. I’ve seen guys with a freezer full of beef or pork that go chasing deer across the section with the truck (kids in the back seat) only to jump out and shoot a winded deer point blank or shooting in the direction of posters. You’d think that guy’s family is starving and chasing a world record buck. But no, he’s out there endangering friends, family, neighbors because he’s gotta “fill the freezer” or more than likely be able to tell his buddies at work that he tagged out. Just like anything else in this world, choose who you hunt with wisely. Goons with guns give us all a bad name.

bird hunters took the injury list this year big time

5 of 17 injuries none fatal were during he deer hunt mostly handling or self inflicted foot or hand .
of the non handling / self inflicted 1 was 2 people shooting at the same deer and one was hit with fragments of a slug in the hand.
in the other the guy had gotten down from an elevated blind and was walking through brush when shot.

only 2 fatal injuries this year , 22 rifle and steel shot where the killers duck hunter loaded gun in boat piled gear on it and it went off , the other squirrel hunter shot a guy in his party in the head

I am sorry to hear about this. I did not read the article. I do have to ask why you posted it.

Why?

I saw it was a subject of interest here a couple of weeks ago; it looked relevant to the discussion.

The unfortunate accident was in SC, not NC.

France makes the US look like a very safe place to hunt they average 20 deaths a year in hunting accidents.

https://www.euronews.com/2018/10/30/all-you-need-to-know-about-french-hunting-accidents-this-year

France is a land of hunters — in 2015, the country had over 1.1 million people actively practising the sport, according to the National Federation of Hunters.

to put that in perspective Pennsylvania sells about 1.1 million deer licenses each year.

Wisconsin 600K gun deer licenses
Michigan 700K gun deer license

We used to have a good group of guys that would push and never had any problems. Most would set the first couple of days, then rally up and push.

Been deer drives since a kid. Was effective again this year! Fact is any moron can cut his finger skinning a squirrel. It’s only as safe as you want it to be. There wasn’t another Hunter within 700 yds. When I shot this buck. 120 yds open sights I might add. Used to bow hunt a lot, find it boring and to be honest, takes less skill. Any body can ambush a critter as it stands at 15 yds completely unaware. Before you bellow...I’ve done plenty of it. But shoot a monster at 50 yards going over 40 mph? Come awn!
