Out hunting rabbits with my father in law today. His three beagles were running a rabbit down a tree line. The public land we were hunting has in the last few years pushed all the autumn olive and other shrubs up into brush pules all along the edge of the fields. Well 3 dogs went in the pile and only 2 came out. We could hear her wimpering and whining and figured she had gotten her collar hung.

So we started pulling branches, logs, trees out. I manage to get deep enough in to see her but the limbs where packed in too tight and too big to break. So off to thd truck I went as the FIL stayed benind. I had to go about 6 miles to a farm store and buy a pruning saw and headed back. From the time we realized she was stuck till we finally pulled her out was about 2 hours. Ended up she didnt get her collar hung but got down in place she just couldnt get out of.

Pictures are a little out of order, but the picture of the entire brush pile the hole at the base was not there originally. We dug/cut that out and I was in past my shoulders and could reach just far enough to get ahold and pull her free.

I am glad you got your dog out safely. I used to train my beagles a place with big brush piles like that in Dayton, Ohio. I started taking my dogs collars off when I ran dogs there because of all the hangups.

Them dogs are as much family as hunting dogs to my father in law. I would have had a bigger mess on my hands had something bad happened. Yeah we decided real quick on no collars next time out.

Three or 4 years ago we had a different dog go into a giant pile of whole trees running a rabbit. She never got stuck but we couldnt call her out. I got on top and made a hole straight down then leaned waist deep down in it and grabbed her as she came past.

I can just see Ole' Bugs Bunny sitting back laughing eating a carrot out of his store house, and saying Whats Up Doc.

I had to dig a black and tan hound out one nite. She went in a hole and didn't come back out. I had to go back home 5 mi. and get a spade. I dug about 3 hrs and finally got to her . She had went up over a root and couldn't get her hind legs to back , back up over it. The coon was dead. Worked half the nite for $20. Me and her were both wore out.

I ran beagles for many years. It is amazing what a beagle can get it self into and get out of. I remember many times a beagle a howling way back in a brush pile. I just couldn't see how it could ever find its way out. Many times I figured I would have to go home and get my chain saw to cut the dog out. Somehow the dog always got out of the pile. Being so far back in a pile I was amazed at their ability to get out. Often they came out the opposite side of the pile with a rabbit in front of them. Many times the rabbit was right in front of the dog, only a few feet. It was surprising how close the rabbit would let the dog get when in a brush pile.

I always ran my dogs without collars.

This public ground is water sets only. But it would make a really nice cubby set
