Nice country. A bit time consuming making sets off the trail you have to walk to. Why do they stuff some boughs into the opening.
Was that a french accent her dad had?

I presume to avoid capture of birds. Many trappers here in BC do this when a serious bird problem is encountered. It works very well in keeping birds out but dos not hinder the entry of marten or fisher at all. [Linked Image]

The only constant in trapping is change so keep learning.

A lot of trappers that set horizontal boxes do that.Yes it is to keep the whiskeyjacks at the back of the box.

Those people are out of Postville on the Labrador North Coast. No French on that coast. Not sure why they are doing the walking the marten should be doing. Nice to see the girl and her Dad at it together.

If you look at some of the topography around there,,,, you can see different habitats just 30 feet way. From Labadoor tea/ black spruce fenn to them going down to a steam edge. Geological rock fractures look quite evident
And those mink up there climb trees, and their skins are really soft and silky, highly prized for making High Grade Stoles because of the weight of the hide but they are small.

Must have had problems with whiskeyjacks going thru the trap since no feeding screen on those boxes.
I always make a walking trail from my snowmachine trail into and around the box.Pick up a good number of cats and some fox that will use your walking trail to go in and circle the box.Especially the boxes with a beaver carcass hanging behind.I didnt notice any snares on that vid though.

Yes very true about the cats and foxes circling the boxes. Cats especially when the rabbits are scarce and they are hard up. Problem is they are wandering then and if they do not get a bite to eat may not come back and so the beaver carcass.

I learned a trick from an old guy, when it is very cold, cats don't have the jaw structure to gnaw a large chunk of frozen bait like a whole beaver carcass,so they will not be interested in it.The old guy would feather the frozen carcass with an axe, allowing the cats to get some and thus remain/return to the snare fence location.
