A #0 will hold a club-footed nutria. A 1 1/2 or bigger makes it much easier to catch these clumsy rats. I don't even try to cover the traps with anything. Just have them bedded stable. When they see a pan, they try to see if it is the right size for their foot.

At least with nutria the carpal bones are stronger than rats and beaver so you don't get ring off.

I've caught thousands of 'em, at least a #2 coil, or #3 long spring. They have tough feet, front and back, so drowning them isn't necessary. They have a much larger hind foot, so trap spread will cut down on misses. Last tip, you can direct them to step right on the pan by not covering the trap, just bed in trail.

When I lived in Louisiana I caught hundreds in #2 Dbls, about the same jaw spread as a 1.5 coil. You would be fine with either the 1.5 or 2 coil. Get the size that would be most versatile on your line. That said, if I was buying coils just for nutria rats, I would go with #2s.

If I was going to gear up for nutria in a big way, I would buy 1 1/2 long springs with adjustable tension pans. Super easy to set on my knee, light weight, and will hold any nutria.

If i was going for nutria in a big way ( I'd be broke), but i would and do use way more 220's than footholds. I wouldn't choose the 1 1/2 ls because of fact that nutria are very clumsy and do stumble all over your sets and i feel that the cs is easier to push into the mud and make more stable. I have far fewer misses with the bodygrips and the areas i trap have lots of obvious trails-- nutria aren't very smart so no need to worry about disguising or hiding the trap. Apple slices seem to work best for me as bait.

I'm with you on the 220s, but the original topic was footholds. Now that we are off topic, I would stock up on snares too. Easier to carry a ton of them through God forsaken nutria habitat. I found out the hard way that you need the same snares that you would use for beaver. Nutria have a set of cable cutters in their mouth. A 20 pound nutria has bigger teeth than a 40 pound beaver.
