No.
Actually I’m wrong. You can get an exemption but the individual must have Vision in the good eye absent of correction.

He does Lost his eye in accident. Other eye is good to go. I guess worst case I'll just keep him in an under CDL position

It's his ability to get a med card that will determine if he can drive a commercial vehicle over 10,000lbs Combination weight.
Send him in to get his physical for a med card easy and inexpensive enough to find out.

Depends on the state . You used to be able to get a eye waiver in ohio that would allow you to drive in state only. At some point that was done away with , only those who had them prior were grandfathered . I was told ohio was one of the few states that once did allow it and that was along time ago.

Can a person with one eye get a CDL?
I'm reading no on federal side but with exemption on state side!?
I dont see why not, Ive seen many drivers that have a cdl that can't drive, back up, or know english! and I thought getting a cdl was suppose to be hard

I have recent similar experience with this. If he gets into an accident, no matter who is at fault, and the apposing lawyer finds out you knew of this, he will be eating your dinner, and supper. You may want to check your lawyer, and his eye doc. Perhaps your dot too. I'm just saying I'd cover my butt prior.

every state is different. those cdl rules only apply to interstate drivers. intrastate license only has to meet state regulations. just like tagging and permits. the same thing. if your driver has a state license to drive a commercial vehicle, and leaves the state with a commercial vehicle, it can end very badly

The agency that issues the CDL should be able to tell you.

IL, CA and MN too Squash. Federal regs say to hold a CDL interstate license the driver must be able to speak and read English. IL has been putting Russians on the road, CA Mexicans, and MN Somali's. Not only are they poor drivers but they don't meet the language requirement. The states have given driving schools the authority to test and big billion dollar freight companies are screaming for drivers. Bonuses are paid for pushing drivers to companies. In many cases corporations that own a freight company or two also own a driving school though they rarely advertise that. Find the right Chiropractor and can probably get a license blind in both eyes.
10-12 years ago SWIFT got in a lot of trouble in TN. TN had given them authority to issue licenses. They got caught putting illegals in trucks. States like CA NY IL MN don't care.

After watching Highway thru He//, it must be the same in Canada. Most of the drivers that run off the road can’t speak English, don’t know enough to slow down during winter weather, and its rocket science putting on tire chains.

I drove OTR for several years and came across a number of drivers who I couldn't understand how they held a CDL. Two where deaf, one with a prosthetic leg, one with a heat condition and several who used C pap's. I quit driving when I was diagnosed with MS but discovered I could get a medical card by getting it from a chiropractor. Bottom line is if you are willing to take a chance, then have at it. I just don't think it's worth the risk.
