Part of the problem is they don't think the same way we do. We feel like negotiations can result in a peaceful settlement. Instead, they follow the teachings of Mohammad who said it was OK to lie and break promises to an infidel. Which is what we are. I would trust Russia or North Korea in a peace treaty before a follower of Islam.

As long as the Navy commanders aren't hamstrung by politics, I'm sure they can hold their own in tense and dangerous situations, such as their protection of commerce in the Persian Gulf.

You are right , That is the problem we had when I was on the first time we where deal with Iran in 1980 ,Was 50 miles off there coast to bring the Marines to land in Iran , We did a practice landing at Tunisia. The Persian Gulf mouth We could of take them then ,My battle station was one of the main targets to get hit first. We had train them then and know how to deal with them .

I keep hearing " they " don't act like that and "they " would not do this and that. Evidence suggests that, as with most religions, the higher up the ladder you look the less religious the people are. They like the amenities that come with the higher position and just preach things to the poorer folks that fore closely follow the religious manual. Partly because the big guy told them to and partly out of fear of the imaginary consequences if they don't obey by the set rules. Consequently, the higher up the religious career ladder you look, the more those folks there want to keep or even better their lifestyle. In other words, the leaders of Iran are probably crapping in their boots by now as they know they are up against a foe they can not beat and would loose everything they have if they tried. So unless they paint themselves into a corner, they are not going to openly start a ruckus they are sure to loose big time. I would bet a weeks pay that the current Ayatollah is happier sitting on his comfortable sofa eating grapes than he would be being chased down a tunnel by a dog and a dozen seal team folks.

I was a EN but work on the hydraulics of the ship and my general quarters station was the aircraft elevator machinery room the deck edge elevator .I also work on the ballast system of the ship that sink the back end of the ship,for the landing craft and boats for the Marines beside other part of the ship I work on the hydraulics. That is all I work on when I was in the navy,also when I did some time in the reserves too.They did not had me work on what they sent me to school for .
