Coon are giving me fits in my mink sets. Staking is not an option.

What is the best way to keep coon near the set in rocky streams??

They drag bricks and weights like small tie plates too far. I’ve lengthened the chain but to no avail.

Would I be better served with a 3 prong 3/8” grapple or a Sabertooth grapple??

Or do I simply have to use a huge weight like a cinder block?

I can relate to your issues...I have lengthen my chain and used JC Conner's grapples...they are heavier and really hang up well. However, I have also lengthened my chain and dug out a spot for the drag hooks(when possible) and pounded them into the creek bottom. Not perfect but it works. Hope this helps...

I use notched rocks and long chain, usually hang up close to set. Wire the rock and attach another wire for the chain. I use a mason hammer before season to notch the rocks and leave them year to year.

It's a tough situation...and I don't know that I have a good answer.

Problem is, with any drag, if an otter or beaver staggers into a set, they can go a long way...especially on a hard bottom stream.

I gave up on using drags at water sets because it wastes a lot of time searching.

Use the sand bags like described here: https://trapperman.com/forum/ubbthr...ner-weight-idea-rotor-hanger#Post6716309 … it next to last post on that page. You can get 25 pounds of gravel or sand/gravel mix in a bag and drown a coon in a couple feet of water or less. Make sure the upper end of drown line in well anchored. I have drowned coon in less than 18" of water with a front foot catch.

Bucket conies I need to haul in a few on a creek I have cat sets in now before the mess everything up. Found a hole in the bank with muddy coon track all over the ice around it.

Use a 3x3 foot (or so) length of chicken wire. Pile rocks in wire, purse ends and sides together and lace shut with a chunk of wire. Instant drag that can be made right on site quickly. You can pre cut a bunch of wire and fold it up, store in a bin, bucket or bag.

You can also use a piece of chicken wire to bundle up some rocks to make any weight drag that you want.Sounds like you have plenty of material to work with. You may be able to stash them after the season to use again.

Using grapples would depend on what kind of cover you have, close by.If in doubt, try a couple and see how well they work before committing to a bunch.Don't overlook the Sabertooth Juniors.

I'd put a bigger weight farther out and slide him out, put a stop on the cable so he can't get to the weight. He might not drown but that's ok, he won't come as near getting out as if he was on the bank getting tangle up.

I learned the hard way that if I am setting traps on any moving body of water, I tie my trap to something that won't get washed down the Mississippi river in a flood! Because eventually, they do!

Im sure I have the same type creeks you do. I wouldn't know what else to use other than grapples. I don't trust wire to wire to a log, cant pound a stake most of the time, and don't have near the water depth needed for a drowning set. Sure, one gets quite a ways away once in a while, but for the most part they are hooked up reasonably close.

Feed sacks. Fill with rocks use zip ties to close them. Carry them in pack pack.

I have had to get all maguyver like a few times in similar situations. I think most of the things i tired are listed above like long chaining to solid ground outside of the body of water and the making of bags with chicken wire and feed sacks to fills with rocks on site.

One thing i have done that i don't see mentioned is set a second trap a blind set really directly in the path of the first trap. A coon with two separate paws caught cannot fight swim or drag darn near anything. Situation was a solid bottomed wide creek where i couldn't get an anchor in because of shelf rock under 2-3"s of clay. I caught one coon with a brake rotor as a drag but it was a good distance and trek to find. To reset it i just took a second trap and fastened it to the same drag. The second coon quite larger than the first was sitting there waiting for me the next day barely moved. Odd situation and odd setup but in the moment it worked well.

Either hook the grapple into the brush or simply staple chain to a tree or tree root. Sometimes I'll just run a rerod stake down through the drag and pound it into the stream bed if possible. You kinda have to do whatever fits the situaltion sometimes. If the bank is dirt, but the stream is rocks, you can also run a cable stake into the bank.

Right now I’m having amnesia and déjà vu at the same time. I think I’ve forgotten this before.

Hypothermia sets in soon with coons. You can drown / freeze one in 3 inch water. Just put the feed sack full of rock/ dirt about 3 feet from trap in middle of water. Push a stake , stick or rebar half way between . The coon ,mink , or muskrat will wrap around the stake and be dead waiting on you . The stake in between the anchor is something most people never mention anymore. But I NEVER set a water set with out it. 99.9% of the time the animal will be drown with little struggle. Even in shallow water.
