Coon are giving me fits in my mink sets. Staking is not an option.
What is the best way to keep coon near the set in rocky streams??
They drag bricks and weights like small tie plates too far. I’ve lengthened the chain but to no avail.
Would I be better served with a 3 prong 3/8” grapple or a Sabertooth grapple??
Or do I simply have to use a huge weight like a cinder block?

Use the sand bags like described here: https://trapperman.com/forum/ubbthr...ner-weight-idea-rotor-hanger#Post6716309 … it next to last post on that page. You can get 25 pounds of gravel or sand/gravel mix in a bag and drown a coon in a couple feet of water or less. Make sure the upper end of drown line in well anchored. I have drowned coon in less than 18" of water with a front foot catch. Garry-

Bucket conies I need to haul in a few on a creek I have cat sets in now before the mess everything up. Found a hole in the bank with muddy coon track all over the ice around it.

I have had to get all maguyver like a few times in similar situations. I think most of the things i tired are listed above like long chaining to solid ground outside of the body of water and the making of bags with chicken wire and feed sacks to fills with rocks on site.
One thing i have done that i don't see mentioned is set a second trap a blind set really directly in the path of the first trap. A coon with two separate paws caught cannot fight swim or drag darn near anything. Situation was a solid bottomed wide creek where i couldn't get an anchor in because of shelf rock under 2-3"s of clay. I caught one coon with a brake rotor as a drag but it was a good distance and trek to find. To reset it i just took a second trap and fastened it to the same drag. The second coon quite larger than the first was sitting there waiting for me the next day barely moved. Odd situation and odd setup but in the moment it worked well.

Either hook the grapple into the brush or simply staple chain to a tree or tree root. Sometimes I'll just run a rerod stake down through the drag and pound it into the stream bed if possible. You kinda have to do whatever fits the situaltion sometimes. If the bank is dirt, but the stream is rocks, you can also run a cable stake into the bank.
Right now I’m having amnesia and déjà vu at the same time. I think I’ve forgotten this before.
