CHICAGO – Two people were bitten by a coyote Wednesday, the most recent in a string of coyote sightings across the city, according to police.
A 5-year-old boy was bitten multiple times by a coyote Wednesday afternoon in Lincoln Park, on the city's North Side, police said. He was walking with a woman outside the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum when the coyote bit him around the head several times before he and the woman sought refuge on a bus, Fire Department spokesman Larry Merritt told the Associated Press. The boy was taken to Lurie Children's Hospital in stable condition, police said. Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning. Just a few hours later, a 32-year-old man walked in to Northwestern Hospital with a "scratch to the buttocks," police said. He had been walking on the sidewalk when a coyote bit him from behind, the man told police. He was in stable condition.
The attacks come after several people reported seeing coyotes across the city. Earlier this week, a coyote snatched a toy poodle and ran down the street with its prey, only dropping the purebred when owners threw shoes at it, according to CBS2. On Tuesday, firefighters and police rescued a coyote that had fallen into Lake Michigan near downtown's Monroe Harbor. Later that day, Chicagoans spotted a coyote roaming through downtown. Officials say the animals have been following the Chicago River in search of food, leading them to the Windy City. Coyote attacks on humans are "extremely rare" considering the range and abundance of coyotes, according to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. A study published in 2007 found 187 reliable reports of attacks on humans, most of which (157) occurred in California, Arizona and Nevada, according to the department. Many of these incidents occurred where people were feeding coyotes intentionally, causing them to lose their fear of humans. The Urban Coyote Institute recommends not to feed coyotes or run away from one when spotted; instead, shout or throw something in its direction.

I've found that throwing lead at them is very effective. Make sure you use the Chicago Stance when throwing lead is that what they mean by "Getting a Firm Grip"

I have quietly done some control for a number of country club golf courses in the suburbs of Minneapolis for some years now. Last spring the council people of the cities where the country clubs are located invited the coyote expert from Chicago to come and speak to them. The golf course sups were invited and one brought me along. Never heard so much nonsense in my life. Condensing, the woman told everyone never to kill or remove coyotes because in very short order many others would replace them. She said it's better to learn to live with them. She seemed very proud that tho Chicago had plenty of coyotes and that most had learned to use the sewer systems so they were seldom around people and very little threat. At the end of all her shpeel everyone smiled and happy that they didn't have to think eradication was necessary the meeting ended. My services were later terminated by all but one club. I hope that woman in Chicago is proud of her idiocy. As a side note, I did get a few words in with her in the end and I was abruptly told how coyotes in Chicago and around cities were nothing like western coyotes and my 40 years plus of experience weren't applicable.
