Considering that, it's very possible that there may have been a little self medication involved when he dreamt up that contraption. "My life is better than your vacation"

The splitter really wouldn't work very well, or at all on hardwood, such as oak, hickory, elm, etc. He was splitting softwood there, looks like maple.
