Cool photo. IMO more pulpwood logging in the Adirondacks would be a good thing for a wide variety of wildlife.

I agree, Gould Paper sold the Moose River Plains ( around 50,000 acres ) to the state of NY in 1959. At that time Gould’s had multiple logging contractors harvesting there. My Father told me, during the 50’s there were tons of deer in the plains. Today ,60 years later without a single tree being cut, there are few deer there.

And yes I do have more photos.

Post more. My theory on fisher decline in eastern ADK is state buying /sealing thousands of acres from timber mgnt and habitat decline along with their forever wild mantra.

Well come on man, we're salivating!

Our forests are sustainable and they need to managed that way!

Forever wild gives you lots of red squirrels. And maybe porkies. I grew up about 30 minutes south of the Adirondack Park border. It's a shame it can't be responsibly managed.

Moose river plains was a traditional winter yarding area for deer. Removal of the spruce probably didn't do them any favors. Years back I was with my nephew when he tracked down a buck near Beaver lake. The heavy snow had collapsed our tent onto us before daylight. We got it set back up and went hunting when the snow looked like it was letting up. We got the buck to the tent that was collapsed again and packed up to leave. We were pushing snow with the grill of the Explorer all the way back to Inlet. Heck of a hunt!

You have a point, but it’s been 60 years since any logging has taken place there. The spruce forest, ( winter yard thermal cover ) has regenerated, but the deer herd has not.

I worked one summer as an intern at the Champion paper mill in Deferiet. I know the mill shut down around 20 years ago. Are there any paper mill left in northern NY beside Ticonderoga?
