A 38D would be a Buffalo nickel They have some value, it was the end of the Buffalo series Not entirely correct, the last buffalo nickel made was a 38D but they also minted 38D Jefferson's.

It's easy to say something is worth X it's another to get it. Here is an Ebay sold listing, 5 coins that sold for a dollar, 20 cents apiece. link

It would probably grade at a Fine to Very Fine... I had my house robbed in 1981 and very nice coin collection along with 17 guns were taken.

The silver content is the value in that coin, sans some error, very small minting series or design etc. Something rare. No silver in that nickel, nickels only contained silver during WWII. They can be identified by having there mint mark above the building(couldnt spell its name) in a larger than normal font. The value in this nickel would be if it was a low mintage #.

Keep it and pass it on to some kid as their lucky nickel. Its nice to see a 80 year old coin but as pointed out above, there were a lot of them made and collectors want near-mint or better for common coins. Or trade it up for a quarter at a coin swap meet sometime if the going rate is about 50 cents.

If you get another one you can rub them together. I'd love to rub a pair of 38D's together!

Nice coin but no silver. Keep it for your kids or spend it. I have many 1938 and 1939 come in and go out. I would not be interested, The $50.00 note is a different story. I sent a pm.
Thanks for posting. What's a ballpark on the fifty with the damage that can be seen?
