Not entirely correct, the last buffalo nickel made was a 38D but they also minted 38D Jefferson's.

It's easy to say something is worth X it's another to get it.

Here is an Ebay sold listing, 5 coins that sold for a dollar, 20 cents apiece.

It would probably grade at a Fine to Very Fine... I had my house robbed in 1981 and very nice coin collection along with 17 guns were taken.

Hah, Actor beat me to it. I would agree F to VF. Not too much collector value. Pretty easy to put a nice set of Jeff Nickels together.

The value in this nickel would be if it was a low mintage #.

Keep it and pass it on to some kid as their lucky nickel. Its nice to see a 80 year old coin but as pointed out above, there were a lot of them made and collectors want near-mint or better for common coins. Or trade it up for a quarter at a coin swap meet sometime if the going rate is about 50 cents.

nessie, your 1938 nickel looks to be in fine to lower vf condition. fine being f12 as a number and vf20 in the better grade its value is between .75 cent and a dollar at todays prices Your war nickel would grade out at very good since none of the words fade into the rim. vg8 its value is its silver content which at todays silver price is $1.01
I sell them at flea markets and price them at $2.00 for that grade of war nickel. the 1938 I would price at $1.50 I know its probably not what you would like to hear but as you said put it away with the other ones. It won't gain much more in value over time in that condition since its only at that value after 92 years at this time.

Nice coin but no silver. Keep it for your kids or spend it. I have many 1938 and 1939 come in and go out. I would not be interested, The $50.00 note is a different story. I sent a pm.

Thanks for posting.

What's a ballpark on the fifty with the damage that can be seen?
