I never looked at their eye Color though.

....After weaning this calf , Im most likely culling the cow. She Stuck late and the pink skin pigment around the eye ( from the Hereford in her) bothers me.

I think the face pattern on calf is called bronco faced with dark skin around the eyes. I am not sure if true or not but I have heard they are more pink eye resistant than cows with light skin around eyes.

I've been told that several times....
Dont know if its true... but I can only keep 8 Ma cows with the pasture s Ive got. All my other cows have blk.pigment. Culling is hard... but breeding Up is necessary [Linked Image]

That's best place for them. Calves especially new borns can and will get frost burn. That calf is doing good, I'd continue to play it safe.

I had a calf born in late march once.... Wind is N NW all winter. That day it switched to Gusting out of the So.east. calf was born in that lean to but lost its fly swatter hairs and parts of its ears.

Bad deal

If the ears are frozen, you have to check on the feet. Badly frost burned/frozen feet are bad news and end of calf if bad enough.

I've got a couple that are year or two old with the short ear deal. But I've also put some down whose hooves came off from being frost bit. First day or first couple days is probably most dangerous, cold weather and they don't keep their feet up under themselves when laying down. Bitter cold like you have now is bad news, but if you can get them in and on straw where they can keep body heat it's much better. If feet get real cold what I've had luck with is heating them back up and then keeping them from refreezing. Depending on how bad/cold they were to start with sometimes it works sometimes it don't. Absolute best solution is don't let them get cold.

That pinkeye and pigment thing I don't think holds much water. Face flies are one cause of eye irritation and could transmit the bacteria that causes pinkeye. But other things cause the irritation that starts the infection also, many times I am sure it is a tail swat to the face that starts it. Keep flies in general off of them is a big help. If they do get pinkeye treating it immediately is important, it gets worse faster than it gets better. If one cow has visible signs like cloudiness, and the cow standing beside her has a watery eye then she's probably next and needs treated.

I was on a 5 day camping trip...friend was doing my Animal chores. That was 3 summers ago, Like 4 animals had visible pinkeye signs. By that afternoon when I had help & meds we got them into my bull pen...and the ones with problems we got into the chute h gate.. Those got a shot and a spray in each eye.
