Maybe the prop guy just though the gun would look cool in the shot. like when the kid smelled the beaver lure and almost puked, hahaha. Any good beaver lure use I enjoy the smell of.nice castor or birch or poplar oil smell. His beaver lure sure looked pretty watered down. Also, the jaws on the trap Caleb placed were far from level.

Considering that the movie is based on the story of Liver Eating Johnson who’s life started in 1824 and ended in 1900 I would say the type and kind of gun carried by Indians or settlers runs a whole gambit, for that matter I always figured it was a double barrel shotgun
But then again who ever said Hollywood ever stuck to actual facts and historical accuracy

I read that cape guns were sometimes gifted to natives. North west trade gun was the typical Indian firearm. some fancier "chiefs grade" smoothbores were also Gifted by England during the war of 1812. Hudsons bay traded some double side by sides later into the early 1900s. I have seen a lot of the Indian guns in museums all over the country and have yet to see a cape gun. For the time and location of the story, I would have figured a NW Trade gun to be appropriate... Maybe even a Tulle although that might have been a stretch. And they made quite a to-do over Hatchet Jack's .50 Hawken... But a .50 would've been on the small end of what was preferred in the mountains. Maybe that's why Hatchet Jack wound up with broke legs and froze to a tree. Mike
