Just about any dog that has a prey drive I have had Gordon setters, German short hairs Jadg terriers and just plane old mutts all of who would track and years ago I had a friend that had a wiener dog that was awesome at running a trail she just was not all that fast doing so

If you can train a coon hound you can train a blood tracker

One of the best deer trackers in WI uses a Dachshund.

I had a blue heeler that could follow a cold track, but would not bark when she found the deer. I did not work her on a leash. Can't imagine working in a briar thicket or cutover with a leashed dog. Some spots are so thick I cannot follow on the same path the deer and dog take.

There is truth to that. Also ear size is important as well in how the dog displaces the air and the air is uplift towards the nose. Size of nose is also important. I am being serious in all of this - consider a bloodhound in the size proportion of ear and nose and height of dog when working. Smaller taller sight hounds have less ear size shorter noses and taller frames. Beagles on the other hand have relatively smaller stature, larger ear size and longer noses. If I wanted purely a blood tracker I would look at something around a basset/blood hound cross. But, I also think you can work with any good dog to track a deer and I heard years ago from a houndsman, even poor treeing coonhounds can trail a bear......

Beagles, A smaller dog will be easier to go thru the woods with, and you can keep up better, and be able to check and handle it. Believe me, a Beagle will still be able to pull you up that hill. i think you'll want to break it from harking the line so as not to push the game along.

hounds are hard headed. bred to run loose and be independent. i would look at curs. you can train to not need a lead and still not run off. the way a good bird dog acts. maybe a stephens stock cur

like a lot of working dog breeds they need a job. not a once in a while job. high energy and can get in trouble when bored. They are smart and want to please. Good with kids and can live in the house just fine. strong prey drive. once that dog figures out you want it to track deer and bear you wont be able to free range it. so a kennel would be a good idea when nobody is home with it. left in the house alone, it will get bored and you may return to a wreck. i doubt fido will be able to tell when your squirrel hunting it shouldn't follow a deer track once you have praised it for doing that. you will need another hobby to keep it entertained and out of trouble. trap line/fishing companion for example.

Likely required to be on a lead by law, that's the way it is here.

Bruce, they don't need that good of a nose because a wounded deer is about the easies scent trail to follow for any dog. Blood stinks and you could probably smell it if you got down on all fours and have a sniff.

I was thinking a cur as well. I hear of some guys training up Blackmouth Curs for blood trailing. Like Danny suggested I would double him or her up as a trapline dog.

That deer could cross streams,wetlands,and other bodies of water.Could also be snow or alot of rain washing the scent away.
