Fairbanks is a smokey mess in the winter. The geography and prevailing winds lead to high levels of smoke accumulation. They are limiting wood boilers and asking people to limit wood stove use if they can. It is all voluntary right now but I would imagine that in the near future the government will ask that all stoves in the area are tested for efficiency before installed.

Where I live there are no such problems as we lack the topography and population density to create giant smoke clouds.

Generally NO. Not at all.

BUT....during the winter...especially when there is a temperature inversion.... urban areas can develop an increase in particulates in the air. There are parts of Fairbanks that apparently get a stagnant air mass above them. Also, it's very common to see ice fog over settled areas during cold snaps. But that is usually caused by water vapor being produced by cars, stoves, power plants etc. Most folks in this climate leave their cars running for extended periods of time and of course that produces a lot of water vapor.......especially in urban areas.

This new registration scam possibly applies to Pete.....I'm guessing based on where his house is located.

He can probably address this best. Martentrapper also might weigh in on this

The Fairbanks borough has money to help residents get rid of "bad" stoves and install "good" stoves. But only in the bad pollution areas. We get bad air in summer from forest fires. I wonder if the borough will ask DNR to register forest fires?

You are not required to have one in San Francisco.

I lived in Fbks in the 80s. Worse cold spells that lasted longer than the last few years. Don't remember complaints about air quality. Since then experts(?) have found particles in smoke, exhaust, etc. The smaller particles can be breathed in and damage lungs they say. EPA got involved as our air is now too polluted during cold spells. Also during smoky times in summer but they can't do anything about that. Soooooooo EPA wants our air cleaned up and wood stoves are taking the blame currently. Most here burn home heating fuel and a requirement to only burn #1 heating fuel is coming. Possibly requirements for low sulphur diesel may come also.
The hoped for BS solution is to get natural gas more in use here for heating homes.

So you register it and then they tell you you're not allowed to use it?

I'm not 100% sure but I believe that around Missoula and Helena they have regulated wood stoves with catalytic converters on the stove pipes .

I know of many folks with coal stoker's also I wonder how long it will take to make them a awful thing to use ?

Missoula is in a drop valley that collects inversion in winter. Always been that way. You would think that winds there would clean it out , but too, being west of the divide, it isn't as windy as on the eastern front.

When i lived in Washington state i found out they have fairly strict wood burner regulations. I know surprise right??? The woodburners i have used fo years which is one of the most efficient made were not on the list as approved burners to use. It is a catalytic stove and soapstone. But for $900 i could buy a piece of garbage from home depot made out of flat steel that would burn twice the wood and heat half the space. I bought the stove i wanted and did everything myself. The company later on got approved in Washington so when i sold my house it sold with the house. Otherwise i would have had to have taken it with me.

Similar to traps in Canada if the company pays enough money their product gets tested and can get approved if passed. If the company doesn't they are not allowed. Total beaurocratic crap really. I don't disagree with being more efficient and cleaner but the way it works in Washington isn't geared towards that.

Yes,but when the cities have a storm event, all their "brown trout" flow to the river. That is ok!
