I made this hat band some years ago. Hat is beaver and holding up pretty good too. A few stains on it. The snake skin was tanned with that orange bottle trappers tanning formula. About ten years ago the rattles fell off but superglue has been working since then. Haven't had to re-glue them. After I sewed it into a loop for the band, I sprayed it lightly with polyurethane. Scales are still not falling off if anybody else wants to do it I am too scared of those cold weather snow snakes to do one of them.

Sure could use 2 matched copperhead skins for bow backing! I'll pay! We're lucky here- arsenic from smelting ore is all throughout the soul. Kills rattlesnakes. I'd WAAAYYYY rather have the arsenic than the rattlesnakes, and as a plus, yer kids have two heads when born- so much more to love. Snicker...Have the doc throw in an extra stitch or three.

Any of you guys ever skin the snakes? We usta' skin whatever ones died in the zoo, home tanned them with alum and sold them in the gift shop. Got $50.00 for 3 to 4 foot rattlesnakes and they often sold in one day. Little less for copperheads, watersnakes and any other snake that had a design. Solid color snakes brought less but still over $25.00. and this was pre-1990 dollars. Eric I tanned some rattle snakes while living in Virginia.

Look at that snake. It take some doing to get me in woods were them nasty things are at, are they aggresive ? I am thinking they are, water snakes are Moccasins are not aggressive. More of a don't give a crap attitude.

nope, I can always dress warmer and prep for snow, but humidity/heat/snakes/chiggers are the scourge of the south to me. It's not simply dressing warmer the arthritis in my joints can't take the cold like I used to be able to.My body needs the heat and I feel awesome.
