Did I check? No. No human tracks. No one has permission to be there.

Resembles a groundhog hole but they are dormant now. Maybe fox.

I’d be willing to bet it’s a badger. There are a lot more then people think.
If your anywhere near the Sheboygan to Green Bay Area there are plenty.

Those tracks don't look like badger tracks.

Have a badger working a mile of county road here in eastern South Dakota for ground squirrels. New dirt mound every week or so on field edges, road sides and field approaches. Gave him a deer rib cage and that kept him fed for a couple weeks but back at it again. They do not hibernate and weather does not seem to stop them from digging. When pressed hard, they will resort to field corn to eat. When I lived in Bayfield County Wisconsin, there were a few badgers. I can recall catching at least 4 over a 30 year period.

They often dig holes right in the side or middle of a gravel road in eastern Montana

I'll check the camera later this week. Don't want to be in there everyday. I have a camera further down the trail also. If I don't get whatever it is at the hole, hopefully I will get it coming or going. If it is still around.

The hole iss 6-8 inches in diameter. The tracks were 9-11 inches apart.

Don't mess with it. It is one of Robert's coyote sets. Here is another one:

It sure looks like a big dirt hole set. Part of me was tempted to slap in a trap, all the hard work was done already.

A digger's front foot, with its big nails, shouldn't look like a rounded k-9 print like a fox. Badgers also walk sort of pigeon toed compared to a fox. It would be cool if it was a badger but I wouldn't hold my breath. What's a flattie doing in the woods anyway...?

Canine is my guess. I bury fish in my garden for fertilizer probably a foot deep, pack clay type soil over top of them thinking no way any critter would ever smell them that deep as they rot but fox always figure it out and dig them up. The holes end up looking like a ground hog hole. I had to put a camera on it to believe it.

Looks like a badger dug a hole and a predator investigated it...I would set a trap there.

If It was a badger then it won't be back because It either got what was there or there wasn't anything there. Nothing more NATURAL then a big hole dug by some critter.

Badger holes are usually wider than they are tall.I have also seen groundhogs come out in late Winter.I think it may be a breeding thing.I haven't seen them digging at that time of year, though.I can't tell the size of hole or tracks,so it could be skunk or fox.Timing would be right for fox,for sure.It will be interesting to see.
