I was working in the fur shed for a long afternoon into evening fleshing coon, on my feet and not drinking anything. Because who wants to unscrew the lid on a water bottle with coon grease all over your nitrile gloves. I know dehydration can cause leg cramps and I don't know if this was the case but at 12:12 this AM I had a good one. I mean from above the knee on the inside of my leg to my groin. When you try and move to make it stop, it gets worse. Can't stand up or sit down, rubbing the big knot in your muscle trying to relax it. I remembered someone said a teaspoon of mustard would stop it, so I limped my way to the kitchen, bent over holding my leg looking like a crab going sideways. I found a spoon and heaped it with mustard and put it in my mouth. I am not kidding, before I could even get all the mustard swallowed the cramp quit. I did another spoon just because I was so amazed at the quick cure I didn't want it to wear off. I have had those same cramps that made your leg sore for days or after you get rid of it you move wrong and it comes back, seems to last forever. This stopped it period, I was amazed. I see how people drown with cramps, how could you swim if that happened? Anyway, if you get a bad cramp, try this!!

Actually, deep greens are much higher in potassium than bananas, without the high glucose content....though a drink of a bit of real sweet, wee bit of salt, in something like Apple Cider V., again the real thing, not distilled, does much good. Rarely get cramps .

I have been plagued with leg cramps for years. The worst ones seem to come at night in the form of what we use to call shin splints. That would be cramps in the front muscle of the lower part of the leg on the opposite side from the calf. They are extremely painful. I also get cramps and calf, sometime while sitting watching TV and at night laying in bed.
Quite a few years ago, when people didn't have computers to google a question. I found a book at the library the went into detail about leg cramps, types and causes. After reading it, I surmised that many of mine are caused from being a heavy salt user. The book stated if you were a heavy salt user you could have the cramps like I get and the problem was most commonly cause by lack of potassium. That the body not only needs to have a certain amount of salt (sodium), but it must be balanced with potassium. This of course is going to be different in each person.
So I started taking a 99mg Potassium tablet each night before I went to bed. This has greatly decreased the nightly shin splints. During the day if I start getting leg cramps, I immediately take 2 of the Potassium tablets and the cramps are gone almost immediately. When I reflect back on what I have done or consumed before getting the cramps it usually amounts to sweating a lot, drinking excessive amounts of water or consuming larger amounts of salt than normal.
I also try to drink at least one big glass of Gatorade once a week or more. Gator aid has electrolytes in it that you sweat out and cause severe cramps when they are lost.
I am sure this will not be a cure-all for everyone and all of your cramps, but it might help some of you. Those of you that might be a little older, may remember salt tablets dispensers that many companies had in their factories or elsewhere available. This was intended to keep employees from becoming dehydrated when the conditions in they were working would make them sweat a lot. They also encoyou to drink a lot of water when taking the tablets.

I lay there in bed articulating my foot in every conceivable direction trying to gain some relief. I get them in the hamstring, too. I had one a week ago that continued to hurt well into the day. It sucks.

Have them also heavy large ones mostly. I to found out about the loss of mineral content, and also did deeper research on how to get them back into your system.
While the home remedies will work for temporary help, they are not long haul cures.
You must have enough moisture in your body to keep the minerals in it active and moving, meaning if you suffer cramps on a regular basis your not giving your body enough water to help the minerals get into your system like they need to do, the same with helping kidney stones stay away, though you do need a diet change with stones as well.
So drink more water during the day especially while real active, it's much better to use the rest room and get rid of the extra that way then it is to suffer cramps when you start to relax !!!
Sorry if my opinions or replies offend you, they are not meant to !
