I have a ton of buckthorn and prickly ash in my woods. I read an article where a guy was cutting off the larger buckthorn and painting the stumps with Tordon to kill the tree. The new growth he sprays with a mixture of the Tordon. Anybody familiar with this chemical?

Grazon P+D is a pasture spray that kills hard to kill brush I believe it's mixed with 2-4-D, for established trees I cut the trees off and drill the stumps and add Tordon to stop further growth.

Tordon is very effective to stump kill woody vegetation, i don't think it kills unless it gets under the bark. So you don't think it would kill newly sprouted growth with a spray? I had been painting non-diluted Crossbow on the stumps. That seems to kill the larger ones, but there's a lot of new growth I need to kill.

Should kill new growth no problem the bigger trees would need cutting maybe.

My biggest concern is all the new growth of Buckthorn in the last couple of years and how to kill it before it gets established.

You need to dilute it so it won’t burn everything down. Grazon is what I have worked with here.

Couple kinds of trees around here dont kill good with tordon on the stump. Kills the stump but you have hundreds of sprout coming up for years that you have to keep killing with grazon. I like killing even the big trees we with grazon. Seems to kill roots and everything. May take two or three applications to kill a big tree but it's better than spraying hundreds of shoots for 5 or more years. I've had pretty good luck killing larger buckthorn by cutting them down and swabbing the stump with undiluted Crossbow. Prickly ash isn't as tough as buckthorn. If you scrape the bark on prickly ash and paint the area with undiluted Crossbow, it kills the plant without even cutting it down. Problem with that is even dead, it will stay standing for years. For that reason better off to cut the live plant down and paint the stump.

I agree. We need to use extreme caution when using this stuff. If it can kill or shrivel up plants, it can't be good to breath it or absorb it.

Google "hack and squirt with Glysophate " to control brush and trees. I agree. You can do about anything with glypsosate. It is a systemic and there won't be any regrowth. In a dilute solution it will kill when sprayed on the foliage if you add a surfactant. No regrowth. Rodeo also good. Most environmentally friendly, cheap, and unrestricted.
