I took my kids to the homestead a couple of weeks back (end of the kids' Christmas Break) to visit my parents and trap some coon/coyote. The youth deer hunt was open for the last day of our visit, so my son and I decided to hunt that morning and take up the traps immediately afterward. The closest traps (MB-550's) to the deer stand were approx. 200 yards away. On this particular stand, you can't shoot/see half that far.

We hunted til around 9:30 and didn't see a deer. I called my dad and daughter to come help us with the traps. One of the closest traps held a mature male bobcat, another held a mature male coyote. I was a little surprised, they were within 40 yards of each other. After seeing the two catches within 250 yards of the stand, my dad remarked "Well, that's why you didn't see any deer."

What do you think? How likely is it that those catches kept deer away from the stand? We were hunting in a fairly remote area, and I assumed that any deer that were coming from that general direction would have eventually circled back around to where we were.

Cute kids and nice catches. Don't know about the deer.

I think you didn't see any deer because none came through that particular spot that morning not because there were a couple traps there with catches. I'm sure deer see coyotes and cats all the time.

I've had no issues hunting over sets, bait and lure have no impact on deer travel routes from what I've seen, whitetails are inquisitive to scents. During gun season, I only set weasel boxes or Fisher sets (if I have a tag) near active stands. Coyotes and Bobcats often utilize the same trail systems, with that said -I would think that a deer that was down wind of a potential predator (in a trap) would choose another route, your scent that you left behind when setting, places you on the top of the predator list. In addition: Dad's are always right grin

I don't think deer are bothered by half as much stuff as we think they are.
Those kids are lucky to have a dad that takes them hunting and trapping! I honestly believe the world would be a better place with more of that.

I pull into the southeast side of a pasture to check a few traps after work and every night when I do the deer go running back to into the canyons. I have a couple dirtholes set along a ridge to the west that I have to drive a couple hundred yards in order to see, but watching the deer this year has told me if I have a catch or not 100 percent of the time. If the traps are empty the deer run west into the canyons and every time a coyote has been chained down they have gone south parallel with the section line road down into the canyons.

I caught a coyote on a game trail that was about 100 yards from a buddy's tree stand. He swears he had no deer for about 2 weeks after that both on his cameras or while sitting. Possible? Probable, I would say not because of the coyote. Although deer baiting is illegal in Michigan lower peninsula this year there are still people doing it. My explanation to him was someone must have put in a feed pile close enough to divert the deer on his trail. It is a big main trail and he used no bait. He insisted that after I pulled all 3 sets from that trail deer started moving there again. I say the feed pile was gone and they went back to normal pattern. No real way to prove either theory. I do know that when baiting was legal I had a coon in a trap on the bait and shot an 8 point while he was caught there. I watched him get caught about 30 minutes earlier.

Wish I had more time to trap....

In the 1980's in Arizona as I walked to a set 3 does scurried up the canyon ahead of me. Moments later those deer came back down the canyon passing within 10 yards of me. I wondered why. As it turned out, there was a coyote in one of the traps.

I have shot deer with multiple raccoons and opossums in 6 box traps less than 20 feet from the corn pile the deer were at.

That would have been fun!

I had sets beyond the far tree line just inside an apple orchard. I set up my decoy and a ground blind and did some calling. I couldn't believe it when the next morning when this bruiser track showed up just feet away from my blind. I'm assuming the deer heard the calling and came in from behind me after I had vacated the blind that afternoon. It wasn't a fluke that that track showed up there.

I don't know if having a catch would make deer shy away but my sets in the orchard didn't seem to bother them much.

Funny thing happened to me in December. My buddy killed a deer on my property and called for me to help drag it out. Was laying about 15 feet from one of my coyote sets. Next thing I knew he was taking a leak about 10 feet from it and I thought wouldn't catch nothing there but next morning had a bobcat in it. I hate taking those things out by myself but it had to be done because of the screwed up laws in this state.
