I wonder if tap dancers walk into a room, look at the floor, and think, I'd tap that. I wonder about things.....

I'd say you're good. Wait until a good cold morning to get. Leave outside for safe insurance. You can see the bottom has not been repaired.

Bald faced hornet nest. In the winter the queen goes underground pregnant, and everyone else dies in the nest. In the spring she emerges and gives birth and starts a new colony from scratch. Every single year they do this. So if you find a nest after a good freeze, they are still in there but dead. Ive collected them, and currently looking for some to hang in the house. Usually when i find them they are too high, or on someone elses property.

We had a tree full of what I truly believe was the African strain of honey bees ( I've been around a far number of bee hives in my life even use to mess around with them as a kid), they were amazingly aggressive so we decided to wait for a day in the 20s to cut the tree done and get ready of them. I'll say this they can still fly in 20 degree weather.

Thx for the replies. I found one a couple of years ago not far from this one, but a storm blew it out of the tree and it was destroyed. Might try to get this one day soon.

If you are worried place in a clear bag tied shut and bring in a warm place. That way you know for sure. My grandfather collected them this way before birds destroyed them.

100% as it's starting to deteriate. The bottom is missing as are several outer layers.

They will not come back to life, they are dead. If you shake the nest dead ones will fall out. Better grab it while you have a chance, weather and birds will tear it apart.
