Need some help please. I've never snared them before and good Lord willing and the crick don't rise, I'll be trapping them again this spring. Instead of lugging around coils and coni's as much I would like to try snares. So, what diameter and length of cable? Best ways to set them? Anyone have pics or may have done a tutorial in the past? Who sells them legal for Ohio? Thank you much,

You’re better off carrying a 160 around. It might make you huff and puff, but it’ll be easier for you.

Easiest way I know of for badger should work on ground hogs. This hole was deeper so the loop is not tight to the hole the way I like it to be, the idea is the cable has no slack coming or going from the hole so a support is not needed. Either way it's going the only thing that moves is the lock.

I started using snares for groundhogs this last year. I love them. I bought mine. 1/16 cable with a deer stop and a relaxing lock. In Ohio , any lock that stops tightening when the animal stops pulling is considered relaxing , including many cam locks. I got this info from my local warden. In a den , I use a 5 or 6 inch loop an inch off the ground. Stake away from the den so that he can't get too far down the hole. If I set a trail, I hang the snares couple of inches higher.

Some good advice there. I've seen a groundhog that someone I know trapped with a snare. It was able to get 2 feet down the hole. It locked up down in the hole so good 2 men and a boy could not get it out , literally. It held as hard as a disposable trap anchor. Pull as hard as he and his friend did , it would not let go. Eventually it was done from pulling so hard that it's body had to be dug out as it almost folded itself hanging on. A tangle stake would have worked well at that location to prevent it from going in the hole. Give it enough cable to go in the hole , you will be sorry.

if your huffing and puffing hauling around 160s you need to go to the gym. LOL And those 160 RBGs are some serious chuck traps.

Thanks Beav, can't use bigger then 155's here on land unless you cover them with a cage or milkcrate. Looking for snaring info.

I tried the 155s and had no luck with them.
I never tried to snare a wood chuck but I would assume you should go with a 4" loop. That old chuck isn't all that big.

I bought my snares from the Snare Shop , I believe. I thought that I had pics but can't find them. I used #11 wire for support wire and anchored it in the ground using the tool from Dakotaline. If the hole is under a barn or shed I'll tack the support wire to the siding.

I had a full blown line out as a kid. Drove the farm truck thru the fields. Had 220’s everywhere. I know age is no excuse but I was 12 and folks around encouraged me! Regardless, never caught anything but groundhogs. Some folks paid $5 per. Definitely keep them from getting down in the hole. Have fun! You sparked a memory

Here is a groundhog snare setup. 1/16 or 3/64 cable 24 inches long, loop on end., use a 4 inch loop, any lock will do, fasten to a scrap stick about 18 to 24 inches long. LIGHTLY poke stick in ground next to hole or trail. Caught ghog pulls snare and stick down hole where it wedges underground and ghog expires. Dead ghog keeps others from moving into the hole for a month or so. Do not use in holes by a house foundation as the smell will invade the basement. By setting the snare down in the hole a ways you can avoid livestock. How good does this work? My best summer was over 5000 ghogs. Any skunk or possem caught by accident also takes the stick down the hole and meets the same fate. On the plus side, no dead ghogs to dispose of. On the negative side, once in a while a coyote or bear will excavate the hole out to get to the dead Ghog and I would have to shovel the hole back in. Eric

If you do not want to pay for locks a tied knot snare works just as well. Support wire is 14 gauge

so your wasting the snare.
