We've been getting a lot of those lately. I asked one of the callers just how much of my $100 donation would go to the firefighters. I was really surprised he answered. He said that $10. would go to the firefighters. Quite a lucrative fundraiser for those doing the calling. I said no thanks.

Dangit. That is bad.

Tunnel to Towers is a good organization to donate to. They truly help all of our servicemen and their families. Money well spent.

They do that in my city too. Believe it or not it is a couple of retired cops from my city working for some 3rd party soliciting the donations. About the same % too. It is almost criminal. But legal. Bet he cringed when you asked the % number , I think by law , they have to tell you the truth about the % of how much gets to the end recipient. He knew as soon as you asked the question he was done.
I tell people this all the time , go to your local firehouse and give a donation directly to them. No middleman. Also , we did flower sales on Easter and mother's day at my firehouse. Some even sell Christmas trees , we did not we didn't have the room.

We also do a raffle and run a carnival. All funds go directly to the firehouses , no middleman.

Paul , thank you for posting this , good information and a heads-up.

Everyone else , see your local firehouse , give them a call they would love to hear from you. Volunteer Firefighters scrap for every dollar they can get for much needed gear. Help us , help you.

My late sister Ellen retired as a Captain from the Madison PD.
Her advice to me on such matters was to give directly to only local organizations.

Just give $19 a month and hope they get a dime 2 or 3 times a year.

I think they have to by law. Let's face that industry could be very easily be used for fraud.

Years ago a friend of mine was working for a short period of time doing telemarketing/ soliciting funds for ' United Federation for the Blind ' during his training for the job they told him that if the people they had on the line looking to donate money assumed or thought they were talking to a blind person, that was ok. But they were crystal clear about not lying about it . At all. No tiny white lies either. If the donor asked anything questions about the telemarketer being blind or not. Complete truth. No if ands or butts. Period. The bosses there must had some serious fear of getting caught.

This guy is a friend of friends. I knew the guy who shot him, because he was in the prison I work in. The guy is a douche bag. His family has pretty much disowned him.

100% of this goes to him and his family.

Seems like every business you walk into is trying to collect for something. What gets me, customers donate and the store gets the tax break and the publicity for the donation. I have also read how little goes to actually doing something the rest is a lucrative way to pay the administration of the charity, yep and it includes the Red Cross.

Up at the farm the fireman stop by and leave a calendar in the door with photos of the department in action. Everyone gives them about $20. I always give them $50 because they came and got me twice when I busted my leg.

When I lived on a ranch in northeast CA, the truly volunteer local department would put up a sign or two in jest saying, "...Come to our BBQ and we'll come to your fire..."

Pete

A while back there was a local news story about police telemarketers and they average 70% of the donations. Just give directly to to organization where they get 100% and not 30%. The same with the NRA telemarketers. After a number of calls from them, I called the NRA office and told them to take me off the call list. I can donate directly to them where they will get all of it.
