If I tell you guys the recipe then you have to promise not to tell anyone, okay? LOL!
There are many different recipes to make bannock. They mostly use the same ingredients, just different amounts of each. You can bake it in the oven, fry In a frying pan, or cook it over a fire. Some people will add raisins, but for me that ruins it!
Here’s the way I do it:
3 cups flour
1 tablespoon sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons baking powder
1/2 cup margarine
Roughly 1 cup of milk
Mix the 4 dry ingredients together then add the margarine and mix it all together with your hands. Once the margarine is mixed in as best as you can, slowly add a little bit of milk at a time and mix it until the dough is kinda soft and doughy, but not sticky. Don’t pour all the milk in at once. Pour a little bit, then mix with your hands, pour a bit more milk, mix with your hands, pour a bit more milk, etc.
If the dough gets sticky, you added too much milk. So add small amounts at a time till it’s just right!
Once it’s the proper consistency you got to start kneading it for a while. The more love you put into this part the better your bannock will be.
Get a cookie pan out and put some margarine all over it then spread your dough onto the pan about an inch thick.
Bake that in the oven at 425F for 25-30 mins. Just watch it and when it’s a nice golden brown color you can take it out.
I hope I explained it good for you guys and hopefully someone actually makes it now and I didn’t just waste my time lol!

Bannock is only bannock if it is baked on a stick in front of an open fire or at the very least in a cast Iron Dutch oven !!! w

I like a couple of shakes of cinnamon in mine. Sometimes I put raisins in it, too.
When I'm out camping I carry along a few of those sealed plastic straws of honey to put on my bannock. Quite a nice treat.
I pre-mix the flour, soda, salt, and sometimes a little powdered milk in a plastic baggie. When I have had a campfire going for a while and have some hot coals, I take my pot or pan and put some of the bannock mix in it so the bannock won't stick to the pan. Then, I add water to the baggie of mix and kneed with my fingers until it gets mixed thoroughly. When you get a good sticky ball of dough I just turn the baggie inside out and put it in the pan. Dusting the ball of dough with some of the dry mix in the pan also keeps it from sticking. Then just cover the pan and set it near the fire and hot coals. After it starts to get stiff, you can turn the pan on its side. You can also put some hot coals on top of the lid. If it isn't stuck to the pan you can flip it over, too.
I still say, if you cook it in the oven at home, it's just bread.

I used to make Bisquick drop biscuits, does that count...?
I wonder if "bannock" and Civil War "hardtack" are related? Just let the bannock dry out and probably about the same or was hardtack more of a solid, dried-out cracker...?

I use this very good drop biscuit recipe for sausage gravy and for just eating. Basically the same recipe as above with a little sugar and pinch of salt added. https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/21135/e-z-drop-biscuits/

I haven't ate bunnies or squirrels for a while but I used to add Bisquick dumplings to stews. It works...
