Bob, I've built and placed maybe 400 owl nesting boxes. PM me, and I'll try to get back to you tomorrow morning. Habitat is key. In some places and some years, I've had nearly 50% occupancy rate by owls. Other places and years, I've had very little success. Marten periodically like them as natal boxes as well in some instances. Hit me...

Where there are lots of natural cavities, most owl species prefer natural. Where there are fewer natural cavities available (logging, wildfire, fewer cavity excavators), the boxes are used heavily.

The chewing is from red squirrels, although the picture sure gives the impression it is from owls. Porcupines will also eat the boxes occasionally.

Red squirrels, flying squirrels, flickers, and marten often use the boxes for raising litters as well. I've never been in places that had gray squirrels or fox squirrels, but I assume they would use them as well.

I tried hanging boxes for owls on my place, and have/had several out for 20+ years. The Gray Squirrels, Red Squirrels, Flying Squirrels and Flickers L.O.V.E. them. As far as I know, an owl hasn't stood a chance to even peek inside one of mine because of the rest of the beasts. Ditto my 2 Wood Duck boxes here where I live now. I was hoping a Saw Whet or E. Screech would move in, I've got both in the neighborhood. Maybe the common Pileateds keep them in cavities here.

Squirrels and porcupines seem to like chewing on plywood. Maybe the glue tastes like food to them.
