The longer the ways and of course the longer your tailstock is away from chuck, the more chance for a taper to occur. Also hippie, I would take the tailstock and chucks off and clean them really well if you haven't. Another thing that gets overlooked on taper issues is lathe levelness. I ran a 20ft'r once that was on two different slabs of concrete. When she started throwing a taper I'd re-level her and it always brought it back in.

I wonder if tap dancers walk into a room, look at the floor, and think, I'd tap that. I wonder about things.....

That could be my problem, like I said obove, we just set this down and called it good.
The bed is 80 inches on this critter and with just a bubble level it looked ok. I do have a digital level now I could check it with, but didn't have it when we set this in.

I'm not gonna change anything more until I turn another one and check my results.

UPDATE

I received another Barre blank and this morning I decided to turn on center. Chucked it up, centered the more and took a pass. This is a 32" barrel.

after the pass, tailstock end still .006 smaller so it really didn't move since I didn't move adjusters. Here's what I did.

Placed my indicator on the side of the barrel where my bit would touch it and run it end to end. It stayed steady.
Then I placed it on the backside of the barrel, 180 degrees from where the bit would touch and run end to end. It showed my .006 small at tailstock.

I loosened up tailstock lock, turned adjusters until my indicator read .003 and locked things down. Made another pass and it's dead-nuts on both ends now!

Thanks for all the replies!
