I`m a seasonal worker and am thinking of coming out next month and taking the wolf class. Then come out the next winter and do some trapping.I would probably come out in January so most hunting would be over.I don`t own a snow machine so can you rent them out their?Would it be smarter to come out sooner and trap for coyotes and wolf? Are these wolfs getting a lot of pressure?I would also be up for anyone out their that would want to have someone to run with and share gas expence and an adventure.I do own a side by side and a jet boat if you think that would help in November.Any input from you locals would be great.I`m going to call fish and game this week but figured it couldn`t hurt to ask here.

Wolf classes seem to fill up rather quickly so don’t wait too long if you plan on taking one. Plus being from PA, if you never had an Idaho trapping license since 2011, you will need to take the 8 hour mandatory trapper education course. You will need both courses. I had to take it when I moved here from PA three years ago even though I had a PA furtakers license and taught hunter and trapper education courses for 30 years.

I'll be putting another posting soon, but I can certainly let it leak here, that I'll be putting on the wolf trapper's certification classes soon. Two classes, 28 and 29 February in Lewiston (Region 2, Idaho Fish and Game) and two more classes, 1 and 2 March in Coeur d'Alene (Region 1). As Grandpa said, you'll need the wolf class for trapping or snaring wolves. I don't know the schedule for doing the general trapper's class, but you'll need that as well probably. I think that there are wolf trapping classes scheduled in Idaho Falls, Pocatello and Nampa in the near future as well, and perhaps others. Hope this helps.

Jack

Not trying to be discouraging but Idaho has 57 million acres of land with 32+ million acres of public land. I believe the latest wolf population estimate by the Idaho Fish and Game was 1,541.

Also, for nonresidents wanting to trap wolves in Idaho. Our law under Trapping Reciprocal Agreement state. “Attention Nonresident Trappers: a nonresident Idaho trapping license allows you to trap only those species that your home state allows nonresidents to trap and that there is an open season for those species in Idaho. Quotas apply.” Therefore, by this definition, if you are from a state that has wolves and is closed to trapping you cannot trap them in Idaho. It probably doesn’t apply to a state that doesn’t have wolves but maybe Gulo can verity this.

forestman should definitely call IDF&G and get the skinny from an official source, but I believe that non-residents can indeed trap/snare wolves in Idaho without the reciprocal agreement.

Sorry about the doom and gloom. I guess I was trying to say don't be disappointed if you come out here and don't find a pack of wolves on every other ridge.

There are places where they aren't too hard to find. Then it's just a matter of connecting with one. Some decent research info here.

Forestman, you might consider the Western NTA convention in Glenns Ferry, ID. I believe it's June 6-7ish, or something like that. There will be a handful of wolf demos and an opportunity to chat with other wolf trappers from ID and MT. Probably the best way to make the connections and get the info youre after. As well as traps/gear without having to pay shipping(assuming you drive). What youre interested in is totally doable but the logistics are the biggest hurdle. There's plenty of wolves to pursue if you have the time and patience.

Thanks for the info guys and I know this would not be a slam dunk.I have DIY hunted elk around the McCall area two times a good many years ago and killed elk both times so I do have an idea of what I would be in for as far as terrain and so on.I also have a friend that lives above Lewiston somewhere but he doesn`t trap at all or hunt wolves.
