I hate fleshing rough skinned beaver personally, but with a bad back I would think about rough skinning the big ones in the woods, especially on rough or slick ground. Hides are a lot easier to pack out than whole beaver. I'm like Boco, I work as a guide and regularly pack elk out two quarters at a time on my back. But my dad has had a bad back and can't pack weights like that since I was a kid in high school. You do what you have to do an skinning a beaver twice (rough skinning then fleshing/reskinning when you get home) and being able to go out again the next day beats packing out a couple beaver and then being laid up for a couple weeks.

I always prefer footholds and drowning wires if the water is deep enough on castor mounds to killers myself. I save the 330s for channel sets or places where there isn't enough water to drown one. Or the occasional beaver that is trap wise to footholds.

So a beaver that size is what, a 2 year old? That's like the one I got back a page or two in this thread.

You're stacking them up minkless!

Well, school is cancelled for two weeks so I took my 5 year old out and set 4 beaver traps yesterday. Two 330s and 2 Bridger #3s on chain with a brake rotor in the deep water. I'm still new to this game. On our first check one of our footholds was snapped and about 4 feet down the chain, empty. A beaver had drug a big chew stick in and left it so he was definitely there, also some goose poop on the immediate area. This is my third snapped, empty foothold trap this year. I'm aiming for front foot catches and have only successfully held one beaver. A snapped trap part way down the chain is probably snapping on the chest? Tips appreciated!

Also, minkless, I just got keen to the bearded beaver man lure that's made here locally. How's it working for you? I'm gonna pick some up.

Now that's what I'm talking about. Late winter beaver gathering in an EXTREMELY beautiful place (last time I was out that way, like 2 years ago). I'm pretty partial to PA man. I can put in for vacation time and do just that. Have steel and other goodies, will travel for fur and community interaction. This has the potential to get fairly creative and quite interesting. Beaver camp in Potter County! I have an old friend that lives in Sinnemahoning. We trapped together (went to school together from 1st grade on) as kids. As I have said that's a fantastic place you folks have there pcr2. Purdy! With AWESOME trout fishing, anda whole lot more.....

@washxc One of the castor mounds I made had that bearded beaver man lure on a stick and it was DEFINITELY visited by a beaver. It went around my trap but it wasn't shy about tearing up the mound. Stick with the lure on it was gone..

Good idea to have an annual field trip for trappers in your area-go out with everyone and make sets-everyone shows their own methods-then get together a few days later to go check all the sets. Then have a skinning workshop to put up all the fur a day or two later.
A lot of fur councils here do that annually.Good on you for getting something similar going in your area PCR.

Yinz can show me how to use this Necker 600 properly.......I am getting the hang of it though.

Still it would be really cool to have a beaver rendezvous, I'll make new buckskins and all....

Any kid that is even slightly interested could be seriously introduced to the ways of the trappers.

I haven't fiddled with black powder and throwing axes in forever.......

Nice catches minkless! Do you guys run these beaver traps and hold full time jobs down too?

Man you sure do catch some beavers. I think I need a 2 week "corola virus" break from work.......

Speaking of which I need to turn my vacation sheets in for 2020.

Thanks for adding pictures and sharing information guys.
