If you can’t catch a beaver, no need for me to start again.

Beaver acting goofier this winter than ive ever seen, glad it's not me losing my mind cause I was starting to wonder. Took four out of a ditch knee deep, idiot's never even attempted to build a dam, no clue what they were doing. Seeing that a lot though, might be due to the major flooding we been getting, even the beaver are trying to dry out, lol. Acting like summer beaver.

Ok I see your post-4 different sites.
How many sets did you have at each site and what type of sets?
Did you do the remakes at the same location as the catch ?

I had anywhere from one set in one site to three sets in two sites. The other one had two sets.

I had footholds at castor mound sets, footholds at lured pullouts, 330s at lured pullouts, footholds at curiosity sets. I knew there were more beavers because at the castor mound sets where I caught beavers, the mounds were refreshed. I know the dead beavers didn't do that.

I had caught beavers at all the sites before Thursday, except where I had the single set, because I just set it on Wednesday. At that site the main dam is about 300 yards down a 20 ft wide drainage ditch. It's at a cut-over with about 5 years growth. That means nothing but briars the whole way. However, by the road there is a ditch about 5 ft wide where they always put in a small dam. In the corner of this small dam, I put a peeled stick and a drop of sac oil. This is a curiosity set. I put a small hole in the dam and bed a foothold for a front foot catch in that corner, but not near the break. I've cleaned every beaver out of this site 4 times in the last 5 years using that single set. It has accounted for over 20 beavers. I caught an adult female on Thursday, but nothing on Friday. Here's that small dam.

I don't' use white feed sacs, I use olive drab sandbags that I get from Sandbagstore.com. Here's a picture of the bag with a beaver. [Linked Image]

Yeah, I've started my 29th year contracting with this timber company. I'm still catching beavers at the same sites as the day I started with them. One day I need to try to figure out how many flat tails I've taken from their properties over all those years. I'm in my 30th year contracting beaver work for my town. Again, working the same sites as I did when I started. The large population of beavers makes for job security. They're always moving back in places I've emptied. Good thing for me it's not usually right away. Otherwise, the company may think I wasn't doing my job.

Wow 29 and 30 year contracts

They know you're doing them right just by that record!

Have you considered reading up on trapping beaver, I hear this fella Charlie Dobbins put out some great stuff. Maybe give them a read. grin

I wonder if tap dancers walk into a room, look at the floor, and think, I'd tap that. I wonder about things.....

How about this Paul-- I once set up a great looking little stream, cannot remember how many sets but not too many. I thought for sure I would at least get 2 beaver. The next morning --nothing touched!! After a few days I caught some. When I asked the landowner (he followed me down to the stream on his quad) if someone else tried trapping them first he just pivoted on his heel got on his quad and went home. Not a word!

How long does it bake you to put up a beaver Paul? That load you have in the back of your pickup would be a career for me. I can put up rats, coon and such pretty quick but beaver always takes me forever.
