The thread "Wood Pile" with the cedar wood got me thinking about posting my cedar chair I built. I have a bunch of old horse driven buggy parts and wanted to build a chair for sometime now. I retired a bunch of cedar fence posts from the ranch that are over ~ 100 years old and were used as fencing till last summer. I split them with an axe and they split nice and came out beautiful. The only sanding I did was on the ends I cut and will oil it sometime this summer. I have about 7 hours in the projects.

Very nice snowy, that looks great and unique.

I wonder if tap dancers walk into a room, look at the floor, and think, I'd tap that. I wonder about things.....

Snowy-You got me thinking. I am an antique picker and have a pile of the old buggy seats, some of which still have the springs on them.

Moosetrot go for it, glad the idea got you interested. It doesn't seem that I can even give my parts away here, to many around or something. When I rebuilt a buggy years ago I was looking for a 5th wheel for the one I was restoring and I had one heck of time to find one. Now I have many of those parts and can't seem to get any interest in them if someone wanted them to rebuild a buggy. I don't want to junk that stuff because of the age and the rarity of the old time parts. Lol

Keep me in the loop if you make a chair or two, I would love to see them. Mine is very simple basic nothing fancy and that is just the way I like things though. They actually would be a very nice item in a grand room in ones home. They are a nice chair to sit in and acts like a cushion and comfortable IMO.

Great job... especially on keeping the cedar in the split condition and not planing it.

I've made more than a few turkey calls out of yellow and red cedar. We all know red cedar but yellow cedar smells like pencil shavings.

^ ya, no planning and I was totally amazed how smooth and even it split. I think the wood is so dried out that it turned out that way. It still has the cedar smell not strong but can still get that great smell after 100 plus years old.

I also have 14 pairs of the old runners they would put on the buggies during the winter. Been thinking about how to mount the old seats to a set of the runners. I think it would be pretty cool.

OH man that would be a great idea. I was thinking when I did this one to split a 12 inch cedar log in half and putt each half on all 4 corners for a rocker also. Then I thought about that and that wouldn't have worked.

I used a draw knife and pealed off the outer weathered wood first then split them. It was easy and fast taking off that old weathered outer wood with my draw knife.

Looks great and what a great idea. I'm going to keep my eyes peeled for some of those springs.

Years ago I ran a snare line on a ranch that removed all the cedar fence posts then stacked them up to burn I now wish I'd of grabbed a pickup load of them before they were burned.

Darn nice chair that would be a great addition to any deck or man cave !
