We have them by the bushel here in the northern Lower Peninsula. They were not always here though. The first one my Grandad seen was in the River Rouge plant once when he went south to make to Big Bucks working for Henry Ford($5 per day!!). That was sometime in the 1920's. The next time he saw a possum was the spring of 1930 when he was living in Oak Creek Canyon near Sedona, Az. My mother was 1 of 5 kids attending the one-room schoolhouse in Sedona that spring. My Grandad was working as a tie hack/logger in the hills outside town and drove by a dead, mummified horse carcass in a pasture each way to work. One morning the horse was moving around. He stopped and walked out to the corpse and gave it a kick....a herd of renegade possums bailed out of the horse's belly and vamoosed into the brush in a slow motion tail-up-like-an-antenna stampede. He was nearly trampled to death.

Now that's nasty!! Sounds like the grinners would fit right in for the movie 1917 but western Europe only had rats...

Opossums are the very definition of nasty. I've shot so many on the trapline that one fall I got tired of the killing and would slap-tame them like Hal, then just release the mud pooping vermin. I even stooped so low that I once mounted one for display in my taxidermy studio......I actually had someone stop in and buy it from me, with real American money! Swear to God! I never had the gumption to mount another one.

About 10 years ago I got a couple on the trapline for the first time. With all the snow and cold last year, I haven't seen any this year.

The difference between animals and humans is that animals would never let the dumbest ones lead the pack.

I just shot an opossum staggering around my hay field in big circles, an hour and 20 minutes ago. I did not want my dogs to get a hold of it. It will get dropped off at Wilmington College to get tested for disease and parasites.
