I was doing some grading work on my dad’s friend’s property when I noticed he had a beautiful weeping willow tree beside his pond beaver have demolished. I told him I would take care of it for him. I set a 330 about 10ft beside the tree in front of a mock castor mound. No luck. So I set 2 footholds on drowners in the water in front of his slide marks. Success on one drowner. It was a bridger #2 offset jaw I used in a pinch since my bigger footholds were at another site. It only had him by one toe. I reset the traps expecting another since a single beaver in a location is unusual. Nothing. No new sign at all. So I seem to have gotten the weeping willow killer. Funny for how destructive he was he done some outstanding wood working. Sucks the tree died though.

I might be mistaken but I'm fairly sure that if a weeping willow tree fell over next to a pond that 10 more would grow right out of the fallen. It roots really easily from cuttings.

Nice beaver catch! I'm going to have a go at them too very shortly.

Keep your boots dry and your powder too.

I remember when a fur check was reality.....now I'm just trapping for the love of it.

Best Regards,

JT

That is some really good work. Especially with a smaller trap.

Thanks! This is the second time Ive had success with a #2 on foothold catch with beaver. I was never crazy about using anything smaller than a #3 but in a pinch I can definitely say #2s will work.

Thanks! Hopefully it will sprout new growth. The homeowner was pretty ill about it.

That tree in the lake will make excellent fish habitat.

I agree. Most folks round here will throw their dead Christmas trees in their ponds for that same reason.
