This question is mainly directed to snare placement on slides. In my situation the banks are steep. Should I be placing the snares high up on the slides where they crest the bank or lower near water level? On a couple of my sets I have placed the snares a couple of feet from crest of bank. I’ve had three misses on the snares placed prior to the crest but had one catch and one neck with one arm catch. This is my first snaring of beaver and looking for further guidance! One beaver was dead, with no sign of struggle and the other alive.

For me it depends on the forecast and whether I can get down to the bank.

If I see flooding coming, I'm setting the tops.

Of course if you're trapping a permit area you have to have the snares in the water.

One thing to think about when setting on slides, you have to try to figure out how they will be coming up to the snare. When beaver are in the transition zone, which is about 18" on either side of the bank and water the beaver are doing different things depending on which way they are going. Same goes near the top of the bank. I try to keep my snares out of those transition areas if I can as you'll have misses. When I have to do so, I'm running so many snares that they'll hit the next one in the line

So are you suggesting setting half-way on the bank? Or more than 18” off the waters edge or crest?

This rain system we had go through affected water levels slightly, I was setting higher on bank anticipating the rise but if water remains stable I’m just trying to figure how to set then as well.

If you want less knocked down snares, set the snare where the beaver is either swimming,or where he is walking, not where he is switching from one to the other.
This holds true to a lesser extent with bodygrips also.

Here in Pa, we’re kinda limited. At least the bottom of the cable loop needs to be in the water.

Do you use a different kind of snare support in such shallow type sets than u do in deep water channel sets?
