I signed up for Social Security checks to start soon. I retired at 62 but have been waiting, 65 in June so want to start seeing a check. My sister said a guy from high school that I knew by name only, left his last day of work last Friday, slipped on ice, hit his head and died of a brain bleed in the ambulance. Who is rolling the dice to collect even more by waiting?

Not me!

I just retired, I'm 60 and when I turn 62 I'm going to start collecting.

Don't want to end up like the guy you described and give the government back the money I'm owed.

WISH I HAD MORE TIME TO TRAP!

Why did you wait? It will take years to get the money you passed on in those years after turning 62.

Law Dog, I waited because I bought into the line of how much better you come out after age 80 by putting it off. I also always wanted to run long mink lines and figured I could make it without taking it, $4 mink isn't doing it for me.

I always figured you will be about 80 years old to get that first extra dollar you passed on that was about $50,000 or more you passed on, that might of been taking it at 66 to early to do the math. LOL

It did me no good to start early. I was still running two businesses. If I started at 62, I would have had to pay back one dollar for every two dollars off SS I earned over $14,600. That means I would have not gotten a dime and at 66 I would have drawn the reduced amount I would have received at 62.

For those who retire and have limited income at 62, I see it as a good move to collect.

There is a lot of persuading from some to wait and get that bigger check at 70. Well, you can research it but it doesn't matter at what age you take it, the wash is about 82 years old plus. They can cut that pie any way they like but at the end of the day the only thing you are betting on is longevity. I personally would want mine at 62 and enjoy that money while I'm younger not wanted to wait till 70 to get more.
If you don't need it then it is still wise IMO to take in early and stick it in the bank/markets etc. and letter grow.

Don't let the wizards fool you, the Gov. is going to pay you more then what you deserve by waiting. It is a number game and they win in almost every case because people die etc. like you have mentioned.

I waited till 70. Could have retired with full benefits at 65 but I found that for every year you wait it is worth $100.00 a month. I felt I would need that xtra money when I got older and could not work and had no way to make money. I can work without losing any of my benefits. Not so when you are 62. Now for full benefits you need to work till 66.1/2

Only problem, is when your old, your tired all the time! I've heard that said so much, and most that I know will try to trap hard one season, and pretty much give it up! Twapping is hard work when you try to put up sme numbers! Not dissing you in any way, but this has been my experence! Good luck.

I have received 2 raises that I can think of off hand now so do the people waiting get that added to their amount or do they miss out on that money? I lived off of my pension for several years and planned ahead no house payments, no car payments, boiler for heat so less LP needed, the wife worked so I had insurance and I paid her for my part.

A comic once said that social security is like taking nuts away from a squirrel and then giving them back after it loses all of it’s teeth.

Retirement plan has me collecting 2000/ month from SS. But also may include paying a high health ins. cost until I turn 65 and get Medicare. So plan is retiring at 64 and collecting SS at that time. I am about 14 months away from 64.
