Found this today and was wondering what your guess would be that killed this rabbit. It was a fresh kill not froze and limp. The back of the neck was where the attack happened and some feasting took place there.

Probably a weasel.

Saw a weasel attack a rabbit once. Went for the back of the head/neck until the rabbit was dead.

I agree with weasel. Most anything else would have carried it off.My guess is you spooked it off before it could move it a little ways. For those that don't know, our cottontails only weigh about 1.5 #.

No large tracks like canine there would of been a lighter weight animal, like weasel or mink that would of been very hard to detect. The snow was melting just enough to make it very tough to tell much of anything.

My guess would be weasel. I have them around my place and have seen them at times with a rabbit. I just didn't know if hawk/owl would take by the back of neck. I find a lot kill sites from pheasants but everything is eaten up except wings and tail feather.

I did take the cottontail and wired it to a downed tree and set a camera up. So maybe we will see something tomorrow.

Is the snow crusted? That would explain no tracks.

If so its probably a weasel from the looks of it.

Birds here usually leave fur at the sight of the attack

IF IDIOTS GREW ON TREES THIS PLACE WOULD BE AN ORCHARD !

Snow is more crystalized on the soft side, not crusted hard. No fur anywhere close and really no visible tracks either. There is a lot of dead fall under brush in that area and pretty heavy willow growth. It was basically on a cut in a small clearing where I found it going down to river.

That sure matches a weasel's M.O.

Looks like a Weasel to me. Not a hawk or owl, there would be a straggle, no fur any place or wing marks in the snow.
