Rick Olson’s pictures of super looking, $92 average coyotes resulted in me giving him a call about fur handling. In our conversation, he said he uses a Gamo pellet gun on them. About 1100 FPS muzzle velocity. (Higher than a .22 short.). They’re quite affordable but bulky. One shot per pump. Not classified as a firearm to the best of my knowledge.
Sam Woods shows he’s using a Benjamin Marauder PCP pistol for coon. No noise and 25 shots to the charge. But they’re a bit pricey to me. They seem to have enough muzzle velocity to get the job done, also.
Who else uses pellet guns for dispatch? What are you using?

I use I pump pellet rifle for squirrel hunting and also to dispatch my trapped opossum. Raccoon I use a .22 revolver because I was out of pellets. Pellet size is .177. Minimal damage and a lot of fun for the yard. Lol. Would never think of it for a coyote though. That’s pretty crazy.

Good ones are expensive. I'm going to get a Benjamin Trail NP .22 cal with funds from selling fur. You are correct that they are not a firearm, so here in WI I can make sets near the road and not have to be 50 ft from the centerline to use it as you do if using a firearm.

Guess a .22cal pellet gun would work in our state. Rules state you must have a .22cal gun with you to dispatch critters with. Then again if it’s not classified as a firearm then I guess it wouldn’t be legal.

You are forced to have a gun for dispatch? That seems crazy. Does that mean you can't use something like the Deathray (from Lee Steinmeyer)?

I use my Gamo pellet gun quite a bit for dispatch although at certain times do you use a 22 short

From what I understand, you don't want one higher that 1200 fps for use on skunks. Higher than that will cause them to spray but it's still strong enough for dispatching other animals.

Keep in mind that a .177 pellet only weighs 8-9 grains, and a .22 is only 15.

That’s how I read it... You are forced to have a gun for dispatch? That seems crazy. Does that mean you can't use something like the Deathray (from Lee Steinmeyer)? requiring a gun keeps felons from trapping. they also require gun ownership in some cities in GA however it is very un-enforceable. I am a fan of the CCI quiet 22lr 40gr bullet at 710 fps with good shot placement dispatch is clean and from a 21 inch barrel bolt action rifle closing your car door is louder.
America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

At 3-5 ft away, I don’t think I’ll miss too often. Sometimes noise can be an issue with .22 so the low noise cartridge is a great option. But with a Gamo, doors are open with the folks who don’t like firearms on their property. Fortunately there are only a few of them. And for kids whose parents don’t or won’t let them use a firearm. That comes up on this forum at least once a year.
