Some points in this, the public oftentimes reports these situations to the DNR, being intimidated with arrest in Minnesota. In North Dakota it is more common for the dead wolf to find a hole to bury itself in. In South Dakota, they tend to call the Game and Fish which pretends it was an accident and confiscates the problem.

As for the genetic percentages, the evaluation has been one dimensional, thinking of one breeding. Pups do reach maturity and do breed which would create a greater percentage of coyote. My neighbor had a wolf dog a number of years ago, until one of my other neighbors decided to administer lead vaccine.
Lastly, again in one dimensional, those posting are evaluating this as a natural breeding. This may have been a "pet" which escaped or was set free to run wild. People are always "donating" things to the wild, from horses to snakes. My brother's friend got a load of "wild" horses off the range. As they were doing the round up, they had left the trailer door open, and one of the horses ran up and loaded itself. Someone had dumped their pet horse out on the range, and the guy said it was a pretty good saddle horse.

I hope that everyone here as I did, left feedback when the public comments were open, to remove the wolf from the endangered list so it's numbers can be reduced. We are farmland and prairie hills here, and wolves are commonly reported. No one has mentioned this, but the old propaganda was that red fox and coyotes do not mix, but the last years here, fox have come back. Fox are evolving, just like these hybrids with human help are being evolved.

One thing I do know is that game wardens aren't

geneticists or wildlife biologists and that the State of Minnesota

doesn't have the dedicated funds to perform a genetic test

every time somebody whacks a large coyote.

Cat catcher has probably hit closer to the truth.

I still say it's FAKE NEWS and bad precedent

to use that word that should not be spoken by trappers........EVER !!!

So if dogs, coyotes and wolves can all interbreed and have fertile offspring, doesn't that make them all the same species? Scientifically speaking. The differences would be at the subspecies level. The coyote is just a mini wolf. The dog is a domesticated wolf.

Nothing wrong with your post except the use of that word.

I've given my opinion just like everyone else.

If you don't want to hear opinions different from from your own,

don't post controversial stuff, or hit the ignore button.

Beyond that I'll stick with my contention it's a bad word for trappers.

Carry on.

I have nothing clever to put here.

This is not my opinion, but read just a few days ago some wildlife studies show the eastern coyotes are getting bigger. Mostly in the northeast. The one in the picture sure looks like a wolf.

Several species of jackals are cross fertile with dogs, wolves and coyotes too.

I don't know about getting bigger, they've always been big since they moved into this area. I've got a picture here somewhere with one I called in years ago that caused a ruckus. Big long legged coyote, at the time most around here didn't even think we had any.

If a guy starts shooting coyotes that look like that one up here he'll find himself in jail in a short hurry. The guy should stay away from the casinos 'cause he burnt up all his luck.
