I have never used one, never really paid any attention to them. How do ya operate them"? Lighter fuel? Are they safe?
My ma used to make those back in the the 70s and we used them while deer hunting have several of the accessories that went along with them such as the belt that you placed 2 of them in and it positioned them over your kidneys, also had a sent dispenser that fastened on the side that you filled with scent and the heat was supposed to disperse it
Like stated above lots of better options available nowadays

My high school girl friend got me one of those back in the day-probably about 1977. I still have it around somewhere. I only used it once. I didn't like the lighter fluid smell for hunting. I think mine has a hole to use for a cigarette lighter. I just asked my wife if she knows where it is as she walked through the room. She knew exactly where is. Maybe I'll give it another try....she's not the girl who gave it to me
I bought a Zippo hand warmer off of Amazon for a wolf hunt back in December. It was the rechargeable one with two sided heating and 6 different settings. It was like $35. It worked too good. If you weren’t careful, your hands would start sweating.

I use them for ice fishing and love them. My grandfather had a jumbo one he used about daily. Trick is generally not to over fill and I fill usually the night before or at least a bit before starting. Shake out the extra and let sit a bit. Have the older ones and zippo.

I use them weekly while trapshooting at night. Mine are old jon-e that i burn coleman lantern fuel in, the fuel works fine but does have a stronger aroma. I have a new electric one also but it is no comparison to the old stand by jon-e.
I had one when I was a kid. Also had one that used fuel sticks and you lit one end of the stick, put it in the snap closure case and put it in your pocket. The closure wasnt reliable the case would open a.little and hot ash would burn you. I had to wrap rubber bands around it to keep it closed, but sometimes the sticks wouldn't stay lit either. I liked my old zipper one but I couldnt always afford lighter fluid for it when I was a kid. Oh the changes in technology now. Jim
Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.
I have several of those that were given to me by an old-timer now across the river. I have a hard time getting them started burning. But man, once they get going, they sure do put off the heat. The heat a lot better than the disposable hand warmer packages. I like to get one going and keep it in a breast pocket of my hunting or trapping coat. It helps warm my blood as it circulates around the heart and lungs. Works great... when I'm able to get them burning good... which isn't easy.

I had the red flocked handwarmers that you opened and added a stick of Some kind of charcoal. Light the stick let it burn a minute , close the lid and it stayed warm several hours.
