Another post got me thinking about this.
I have never seen skunk or otter climb although I believe they could.I have seen groundhogs climb small brush.
I would be interested in hearing first hand information(no hearsay or old wives tales) about animals not normally associated with being arboreal that trappers have seen climbing.
I have caught several foxes over the years in elevated marten boxes on trees 5 feet up(no running pole).I believe these animals jumped up(not climbed) on top of the box and were caught.

I know ground hogs can climb. I shot one that was ravaging my garden out of a tree by the garden. I have never seen a skunk or otter in a tree either.

Groundhogs can climb quite well, seen it many times and has shot a couple out of trees. I've seen skunks in the crook of trees a couple times, both the trees were fairly slanted though.

Let a civet go last summer it headed for a cut bank I was surprised to see it climb a evergreen tree like it was nothing, had one on a game can climbing a leaning tree like a squirrel just on the bark.

Pretty commonly, I've caught red fox and mink in marten sets elevated 5' off the ground. However, always with a running pole. Wolverine common on running pole as well, and I've seen wolverine very agiley climbing cottonwoods and balsam poplar at least 60' to avoid encounters with wolves or trying to escape a helicopter. Striped skunks I've caught rarely in elevated marten boxes, but again, always with a running pole. Northern red-backed voles I've caught many times in rat traps (set for for red squirrels, flying squirrels and short-tailed weasels) nailed to a tree about 5' off the ground with no running pole. Grey fox, very arboreal.

I watched red fox climb persimmon trees to eat persimmons. The deer seemed not to mind the fox either. The more he climbed and shook the limbs, the more persimmons would fall, lol.

Its common here to catch mink in trees in the bush far from any water especially later in the winter. Most are large males with large nuts, and in boxes where perforated sardine cans were used as a call/bait.
Another time when mink show up in marten boxes is after a mid winter rain. Two years ago after such an event I had 3 mink in elevated marten boxes on a spurline of 16 boxes. This was adjacent to a watershed however and I believe the mink were flooded out of their subnivean hunting area under the shell ice.Obviously they were temporarily relegated to scavenging for a living.

This isn't exactly climbing, but when I was working in a rock quarry in Kentucky I saw a red fox and followed it with a pickup into a box ended sheer wall about 40 feet high. I was wondering if it had a den in some of the old piles of dirt at the bottom of the wall so I watched to see where it would go. He ran to the corner of the quarry and jumped back and forth on the tiny ledges in the corner gaining altitude until he cleared the top and was gone. The way he did it, I believe it was a common route he had developed to escape hounds or others chasing him.

My skunk is not able to get on the couch by herself looks like a turtle trying to climb a curb she pulls at the dogs blanket but get nowhere. She has learned to get on my lap for a back rub to stand on the foot rest part of my recliner so I can put me feet under her butt. She then comes up with the foot rest then to get down later she walks over and scratches a bit until I let it down 3/4 of the way and off she goes.

I once found a ground hog in a den tree. I could see him in the hole sleeping from on top of a lake dam. I shot.him and climbed up and grabbed him and ate him.

My Old Man used to tell me(when it came to fighting)-"any tree in the bush can be climbed as long as it is felled first".I guess beavers follow that rule.Never seen a beaver climb.

I watched a mink go up a dead tree with no bark left, about 12 feet straight up to a woodpecker hole, looked in and went down.
