The last I read it would be a long time. Some say maybe never. It was unbelievable back about 20 years ago.

Providing wild fur to the industry at below the cost of production for over 50 years.

Mostly carbon neutral since 1948.

I believe those winter hunts will likely never start up again. It was a great way to go on an affordable "exotic" hunt. I took my All Purpose Boy the last few days of 2000. It was worth every cent. I have no idea how many of them I mounted, but for a few years they were really popular with the hunters in this area.

Are they a different caribou then the ones In Alaska? Seems like from pictures the Alaskan caribou has more antler mass.

Had a chance to go on a hunt with a friend about 35 years ago and have been kicking my butt ever since turning him down a couple years in a row.

I heard never but they seem to rebound well.
I had the chance a couple times to go but sadly didn't.

I am not very optimistic they will ever open it up again. You still can go to Nunavut First Nation, part of Quebec. I don’t know what the real cuplprit is or was with the decimation of the herds, but the winter hunts that took place along the transaiga Highway in the caribou winter range , IMO did a lot of damage.

I went back in 2015 with Jack Hume Adventures and it was an unbelievable trip. It was a big blow to them when they stopped the hunting. I have a good friend that stays in contact with the Humes and there has been no good news on the reopening in the near future.

We sat for about three hours because a herd was crossing the road. There were Caribou as far as we could see. It's hard to believe that they're gone!

Heard it was a combination of parasites and the natives not wanting others to shoot them.

Back in the 80's when I lived in NY state I went twice, 87 and 89. We missed the migration the first time at the camp we stayed at, but in 89 we talked the outfitter in to opening a week earlier than usual. Six hunters, 12 bulls. It took 3-1/2 days for that particular herd to pass through the camp area. Better than Serengeti migration cause that was only ONE herd. Many would go through during the entire time of the migration.
I believe the estimated population back then was around 800,000 plus.
